Really? It’s more a psychological thriller but it’s very early Danny Boyle.

The number of ways they make it hard to vote in Alabama is just baffling to folks who have never lived in a voter suppressed state. And the reason they do it is because Alabama is over 25% Black. That's it. That's the entire reason. They don't want Black people to vote.

We will never defeat Trumpism in this country so long as we accept the idea that some kinds of people are not as good as others. It's liberty and justice for all, all the way, for everyone, without a single asterisk.

We need to break the model that was consciously developed to prevent us from coming together. Insisting on someone who is going to do that is not "purity" politics. It is literally the whole game.

What was ultimately shaped by these conversations is a set of questions that can help guide our preparations for this crisis.

The maddening thing is that we know EXACTLY how to prevent this. Yes, kids should get vaccinated, test, stay home when sick, mask as much as possible. But even without any of that: Better ventilation and filtration in schools can MASSIVELY reduce viral spread, for all sorts of respiratory diseases.

I watched a lot of American Idol and I'm here to talk to you about ai ihavenoplanforthis.ghost.io/friends-fear...

The early rounds of the show were obviously awful, exploitative shit, but there was a repeated refrain among the people who would go on to crash and burn in the audition. They were there because they just felt they were supposed to be a star. I don't want to dunk on people who were humiliated on international television, but what's interesting to me is how many people believed they could rock up and become, not just a professional singer, but a famous one when they've clearly never put in any work towards being able to sing. They haven't sung enough to know they're bad at it, which raises the question of whether they actually even like to sing. I'm not saying there aren't people who sing a lot and are still not great at it – it's me, I'm the problem it's me – but if you sing a lot and you're not great at it you learn that you are not great at it and you work at it to improve. You're an entertainer, you're there to give people a good time, and if they think you're not having a good time then they won't either. Part of the job is hiding the job. It's a double edged sword, obviously, and that's one of the things that's got us here, with people claiming they should be able to have the magic of art without the work of making it. It's not just that they don't understand the work, it's that they don't want to understand it. They want to inhabit this perceived world of the artist. They want to believe it exists. But it doesn't. Artists live in the real world and they do real work and it's hard. You do your best work when you're lucky enough to have found a great director, or editor, or whatever – someone who understands what you're trying to do, who sees what you're capable of, and who can push you hard enough to get you there. This involves arguing but in collaboration, rather than contention and, with the right creative partner, it's invigorating and satisfying and honestly one of the best parts of the process. A lot of people don't understand this and you see it on reality TV all the time. If you're used to creative work you see the comments of people like Simon Cowell (Or RuPaul, or Keith Brymer Jones, or whoever) for what they are: useful notes from an expert that will help a contestant grow. But to a lot of the audience (and honestly too many contestants) they land as criticism. Insults, even. The truth is you get to choose how much you want to improve yourself, in whatever direction. If you're not very strong and you want to get strong, you start picking up heavy things. You pick up heavier things this week than you did last week and it's hard and you have to push yourself. If you can afford it you hire a person to push you for you. You accept that it's hard and you do it and as it becomes easier you choose whether you want to accept that ease or make it harder again and get even stronger. If you want to become good at art then you start doing art and you're bad at it, but you keep going and try to be a little better this week than you were last week. You study and read, you take a class if you can. You push yourself or you find someone who'll push you and you get better. It's not easy, but it should be satisfying. If the process of learning how to paint feels like hazing then maybe you just don't like painting.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

Y'all. I'm struggling to remember a word. It's like the feeling of wanting to just bury your hands into something - when something invites touch, but not sexual. Sensual and lush and tactile, but also just really viscerally of the earth in a way? If that makes sense? A painting you wanna dive into.

This is some bullshit. Jo's fine. Any harm she endures is self-inflicted. Stop banning people for expressing anger at a person actively trying to eliminate them from society completely. Ffs.

It does make me angry when terrible men who've ruined countless lives die peacefully at home at an advanced age, and so many, so *many* innocents never get that privilege. But they *do* die, so there is that.

Yes! I used some nice thocky tactiles, and the keycap profile is very satisfying sound-wise too.

I should go through my stash - I have so many! The worst thing was when so many of the group buys went tits up and it had been too long to get the bank to do a chargeback. It's like, "no, but listen..!"

They both fulfilled though finally, right? I feel like I have them waiting in a bin somewhere for me to get through my build backlog.

I did build a 65% version of the Severance keyboard when PMK did a show-specific reissue of the Dasher keycaps. Alas, no trackball or other fun nonsense.

Looking down at mechanical typing keyboard resting at a janty angle on a very weathered brown leather deskpad. The keyboard is a deep blue. The keycaps are two different colors - Bright azure blue for the inner keye and a lighter teal blue for the outer keys. A simply black cord with silver stripes and a silver connector is plugged in to the board.

I think it’s funny that me saying that overly repetitive expository dialogue is most likely a result of exec notes is the same as saying not to provide guidance at all in gameplay and/or “reads like a linked in post”? What does that even mean?

See, in the waxing to your kids example, I think the way that works best is if it reveals something specific about the character that's not just biographical detail. Like is this a story dad always tells and the kids are like, "yes, yes, we know, twenty WHOLE years"? Stuff like that.

It depends on the oversight. Like, a good note can absolutely make something way better. Having creative feedback is a big part of the process. Writers read and note each other all the time. Just, the phenomenon of explicitly spelling out emotion and exposition is usually not additive.

oh yeah, of course. so much of that stuff is very ymmv. I, for one, never notice when the prop to-go coffee cups are clearly empty on shows and in movies.

Those don't work for me because that stuff CAN come through in context (character relationships, etc) or is overly specific info that isn't necessary in the moment. Varric saying "we have to stop the ritual" is more comparable to, like, "if we don't find the kidnapper in 12 hours, the kid will die."
