I gave up eating meat about 8 years ago. Coming out of lockdown was so weird, I’d spent 2-3 years without seeing anyone eat so much as a bacon sandwich. Proper “what on earth are you doing?” reaction

If Police Scotland actually dealt with these reports properly that is…
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
All the people who call cyclists and people who film and report phone-using drivers grasses should feel very ashamed about now. Reporting this dangerous law-breaking will literally save lives.

www.researchgate.net/figure/Noise... EV better than ICE, but much worse than non-car alternatives like public & active travel.
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve always thought the big omission from this is noise. Which again, EVs don’t solve. Or at least above 20mph they don’t.

Made it to the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome with child 1 today for the first time. Incredible venue. Hitting those steep corners for the first time is scary but so much fun.

I’ve attached my go-pro by cable-tying the selfie stick to my frame.
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
That and some kind of awareness/reaction test added on the side. Most drivers that put me at risk when I’m cycling are using their phones at the wheel, but very elderly drivers are a close second.

Frustrating to see @privateeyenews.bsky.social calling this an accident. Being three times over the drink-drive limit and getting behind the wheel is not an accident, but a deliberate choice by Dosunmu.

Reminds me of the line from Arrested Development: “It's one banana, Michael, how much could it cost? 10 dollars?”
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes but… gas drives high power prices when renewables share of the grid is low. So until we have a cheap way to store electricity (and increase demand side flex), the marginal benefit (to wholesale prices) of adding more renewables reduces with each GW.
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not even that wealthy people stash it in offshore accounts, but that they use it to buy assets, which raises asset prices, creating more wealth inequality.

I tend to throw “sustainable aviation” into the same bucket at “direct air carbon capture” - an unproven (at scale) tech that is never going to work financially, apart from as a distraction to allow polluters to keep polluting.

I’ll admit to breaking a road rule today. Light turned red ahead of me. I could have stopped, but didn’t. Car behind me flew through, so if I had stopped, I’d be flattened. 20+ years of sharing the road with cars and my spidey-senses are finely honed.

At the moment, we’re on Intelligent, so cheap overnight, and a flat day rate. I could load shift to avoid peak use but there is no incentive (apart from occasional saving sessions). Not a problem in the summer so much!
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social)
I’d like to see @octopus.energy offer a tariff for EV & solar/home battery owners that works in the winter better. Lack of sunlight means our battery usually runs out just in time for afternoon peak. A second cheap window at 2-4ish (with higher £ peak) would see us through.

Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
Most often seen in council vehicles, or commercial, followed closely by parents outside the nursery/school gates.
Tom Quinn (@geologiser.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve been trying to get some action on idling cars. At the moment, an environmental officer needs to witness it happening, and ask the driver to stop. If they don’t stop, then they can get a £20 fine. Hardly a deterrent.
