I'm guessing that's because Trump is the only person who doesn't immediately tell Kennedy to eff off. "Empathy".

Biden is vertical and healthy. Trump is .... well, we don't know, do we?
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
There's a solution to that. I wonder if they'll take it?

Wormbrain is an economic disaster as well as a healthcare catastrophe. The medical & research talent built up over many decades is now migratory. Americans will die because of what he is doing. Do not forget that GOP senators did this to you. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The time in the oval office is about the same for each party.

The lawyers who are playing fast and loose with the court should be sanctioned by their bar association. I'm a professional engineer, and if I messed around like this I'd be in front of the disciplinary committee in a heartbeat.

Well, now it's in the news. Bet RFK Jr is going to get right to work on that.

My Dad had a posting to England in 1957. We had to quarantine our dog for *six months*. Things aren't as extreme now.

Good point. I read too much for my own good. So the Dems had better get serious about relentless coms targeting Fox & Facebook users to break through the ignorance that inflicted Trump 2.0 on the US and the rest of the world.

Republican public servant. Both contradictory and incongruous. But not in Congress.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
So crimes are down by some %? If the week before the NG was deployed there were 4 muggings, and then there were 2, that's a 50% drop. But the NG isn't in crime-filled areas, so maybe that was because it rained. Talking heads aren't analysts.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Wasn't it nice when there was a President who might spin things a bit but didn't lie relentlessly. And the people in his cabinet were decent public servants who did the work instead of cosplay performers who lie like rugs.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sure Pam Bondi will get right on that.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, now that he has learned (and taught them) how profitable the grifting can be.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes! Establish a small secretariat, with a steering committee & some funds, staffed by PR pros & start telling the story. Find a way to outflank Fox & Facebook by using Fox & Facebook against the right wing disinfo machine.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not going to listen to Gorka. I heard enough from him during Trump 1.0 to know he has nothing of value to contribute to any intelligent conversation. So what's up CNN? You people all slow learners?
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
It's already a "richest third world country" since the Roberts court gave politics to the billionaires in 2010. I totally agree about blue state governors protecting their people. Also mount a coms campaign to show blue vs red, public service vs Republican rule. "Red states could choose this too."
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Should it? Or should it just be ignored, or ridiculed as the blatherings of an ignoramus? Actions must be challenged in court. Although, on second thought, DOJ is short of lawyers, so perhaps the more they are tied up in court, the less damage they can do.

As @pkrugman.bsky.social would tell you, when Erdogan did it in Turkey, he hit 86% inflation before eventually getting it back just below 40%. He also says that while the Fed's role in controlling inflation is important, it's only one of the things they do. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/we-are-all...

I don't blame you, it's horrific. Even here in Canada, I feel as though it's 1938 and I'm Polish. I try not to obsess and hope Americans will vote in huge numbers to oust Republicans at all levels for a couple of cycles to get them to turn away from fascism.

halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I dropped my sub quite a while ago. There were still some good writers there (fewer now) but the editorial stance made me furious. Good luck over the next 18 months in dethroning the fascist GOP!

I don't think it's the "names" that divide Americans. The existence of concentration camps in what was once a free country might be the real issue.

I don't think troops in the streets is a distraction. I think it's the main event. He has been talking about martial law for a decade, & now, surrounded only by sycophants, he's doing it. Starting with a city here, then there, then there 2 cities, then 3, getting everybody used to the sight.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
"Pirro said ..." I have 787 million reasons why I wouldn't believe a word of it.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
I think this is right. I disagree with those who think troops in the street are a distraction. I think they're the main event. The water in the pot is heating up and like so many things it will proceed slowly and then all at once.

Is Miller a complicit lackey, or is Trump the frontman marionette? Pardon the LOTR reference, but is Miller Wormtongue?
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Trump says a lot of Americans want a dictator, but he is not a dictator, ergo a lot of Americans don't want Trump. I think he gets that part right, it's consistent with polling. BTW, all snark aside, always stay focused on the enablers in the GOP as well. They need to be voted out wherever possible.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent

halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
"Vet her nomination." Please. The way you vetted all the other obviously, dangerously unqualified posers. @timothysnyder.bsky.social called the nominations a decapitation strike, and that is looking prescient.

He's a star recruit! Gotta see that face! And yes, probably - lots of cuts to catch his breath before the next "challenge".
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Lying is a symptom. Lack of character, unprincipled behaviour. I'm looking at no oversight, approval of obviously unqualified nominees, just not doing the job. On the data side, security yes, but also the recent tinkering with Bureau of Labor Stats. Two sides to the coin.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
The investigation will be driven by law & not politics, says the regime that has done the most ever to politicize absolutely everything. Can you picture Harris or Clinton talking like this about an "investigation"? But this lickspittle to "America's Hitler" is all over it.

halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. My Cdn perspective: The politicization of the public service is a huge issue (mil & IC incl). The lying & lack of principle, esp GOP sens, generally poor character. I vote character over policy. Data integrity - I was horrified at the DOGE data thefts, which seem to have been forgotten.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Humanity is ok. This is Republicans. Some of them are fine, too, but they have to be convinced to vote blue for a couple of cycles to purge the GOP of this poison & get it back to being a serious, public service-oriented party.

halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Viewing from next door, I suggest fixing Citizens United is huge (but not enough). The graph in the article ticks up hard at 2010. Secondly, gerrymandering IMO eliminates the election - it's all about the primary, so you get the most partisan 5-10% choosing the candidate, maxing out the crazy.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
That's sad. But it doesn't make it any less destructive.

This is a pretty clear signal after last week's meetings that Putin is not seeking peace, that Trump scored 0 out of 10 on his "beautiful" meeting, and that the only way this war ends is through defeat for Putin.

Great summary. But "One would think that a man who once owned a casino would know not to allow a known cheater into the house." Perhaps that's why he went bankrupt so often? President Walter Mitty believes his own fantasies.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Ooooooh, tell me what you did in the war, Daddy!
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. All the media discussion seems to be around Trump not wanting to disrespect Putin. Actually, he showed immense disrespect to Zelensky and all the allies with him. Immense disrespect. And he's clearly prolonging the war and making it more vicious by his subservience to Putin.
halfbackjack (@halfbackjack.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks for a very good piece. Not a comforting read, but well said. Watching from Canada, I'm amazed that voters continue to support a party that lies constantly and is clearly interested only in power, not public service. Trump is the nadir of that party.

It's also up for a vote by Californians, and scheduled to sunset at the next census for a properly scheduled redistricting. It's a democratically organized and presented defensive measure, and more blue states should adopt the strategy.

Speaking from next door, this is exactly right. We could excuse Trump 1 as an aberration. Trump 2 won the popular vote after being convicted, after rape, fraud, insurrection, the toilet papers, his inept covid response. But her emails, then but her laugh.

I got a bit of a Stockholm Syndrome vibe. Something about the way Trump was clapping his hands and shifting his feet. If he had brought a blankie, I'd totally understand what was going on, I see it every day.

Ah, a security guarantee. All those at the table should know - I bet Zelensky does - that UK's border security was guaranteed in 1994 by the Budapest Agreement signed by the US, France, UK, China, & Russia. Yes, Russia & US. Would a guarantee signed by Trump & Putin be more or less credible?

Worse. He's so oblivious that he apparently thinks nobody can get a peace process with Putin because everybody else is bad at their jobs. A SecState who can't read a situation and see what the obstacle is, and the clear solution. There's no negotiation with the guy who thinks he's winning.
