No they served their terms of enlistment 6/12/18 years and are now serving their communities in their home states in the guard to achieve full 20 year retirement. They are contractually obligated to serve, they are not quitters. Warriors don't quit serving until their contracts are fulfilled.

Orders to do anything come from the commanding officer, and filter down through the chain of command till it reaches the soldier in the field. What is law? The US Constitution If it falls outside of that, its illegal, even if its a direct order from the president. Hope that helps.

I refer to the national guard troops, they got called up. It’s not voluntary. I feel for them. Indoctrinated to follow orders, it’s the leadership who ordered it that should answer for the deployments to pick up trash.

Here is a photo of my team holding up bags of trash we collected in Kuwait. Soldiers pick up trash and rake leaves. It’s part of the “leave it cleaner than you found it” tradition of American military culture. It’s a real thing. It would be weird if they DIDN’T pick up trash.

I guess my thoughts are that I’d rather they employed citizens for it and let these soldiers resume their lives. There’s no need. The cost of this theater would be better applied to local forces.
