Good to remember the Haymarket Massacre, the subject of my favorite Labor Day factoid: May Day, which is Labor Day in many developed democracies, commemorates that awful event. It is celebrated in many places, but not in the US, where the event occurred. This is not a coincidence.

I was older than that and didn't have any firm basketball commitments other than a vague attachment for the Nique-era Hawks. I watched the Bulls, I didn't want them to lose, but I can't say I "rooted" for them. It would've been like rooting for the ocean--sort of irrelevant. I just wanted to see it!

I enjoy a Jersey Mike's sub, but their obsession with "The Juice" has always been at least subtly disturbing.
Also, for large purchases, bank checks are very handy. Yes, you can find a way to do a lot of those things via wire transfer, but that may take more time and be more expensive. But I'm also the kind of person who feels better being able to go and talk to a person if needed.
In my experience, there are a few types of services that my bank effectively requires in-person meetings for. For example, in opening an account for my minor child, they wanted to see physical copies of certain documents and have parents present to sign consent forms. Electronic wouldn't do.

Yeah Vertigo is another really interesting example. Like 12 Monkeys, it has a sort of circularity that makes the shock also, at minimum in retrospect, seem inevitable. The Mist doesn't show that level of craft, for sure.
It's really difficult to pull off shock endings without it feeling like a trick or a gimmick, and people mostly don't enjoy the sensation. It's rare to find a movie--12 Monkeys is my favorite example--where the magician shows you the trick right from the start and then still pulls it off.
Yeah, I like it too, in concept. The execution makes it seem cheaper than IMO it should, because it does have a little bit of a sudden / arbitrary feeling because not all the right groundwork--again, IMO--has been laid for it. Full marks from me for trying, though.

Eh, not me. It's very clumsy, but I do have a weak spot for actively, aggressively anti-Hollywood endings. I do agree that it's so over the top that it sort of punctures the whole thing, but dear Lord almost nobody even tries.

This belief on his part is much more than conventional ego gratification. There is a deep level at which he actually believes it. It's why he's willing to go along with the "chosen by God" stuff, even though he obviously doesn't believe in God and never has.
This is corollary to Trump's larger narcissism. Just as, in his business, he saw himself as coextensive with the company, he sees himself as President the same way. There are many bizarre statements he makes about "the country" that become legible when you realize he means himself.

The most impressive thing about this campaign is how *creative* they are. They’re trying new stuff! Multiple times during the last few months I’ve thought “wow, I’ve never seen a campaign do that.” Much more of that needed everywhere.

Absolutely! We just took some friends who were visiting from Brooklyn to Hudson & Packard here in Poughkeepsie, and they were blown away. One guy who came in to pick up a pie had driven 45 minutes up from Westchester for it.
Of course this, but I'll add that my sympathy for both of these men is greatly reduced by the vociferous shitting-on they have both done of tv adaptations, in Sanderson's case of books in the series he himself did not even write.
