I was about to say this. In the past I shouted at my cat (rest her soul) for waking me up, but she was just seeing if I was still there. She wanted confort. I should have obliged. I've never made this mistake since.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
My views ARE reality.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I didn't do that. A person can be a 'liberal' and make perfect sense. Perhaps you've misunderstood something I've said?
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Near the start someone in the background says: 'Why is no-one helping him.'
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
That's right. False.

They always get rewarded. 😂

LIterally a drag queen.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't need to 'google'. If I don't know anything about something I don't post. Of course, anyone who doesn't wave your particular flag is MAGA, right?
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
At 81 he can't tell the difference. She probably said '60'.

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I said nothing about 'idiots'. I said that a fair number of people opining, judging by their commentary, seem to be historically unaware. I don't know what 'Phi Kappa Phi' refers to (apart form it being Greek) or why it matters.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
There's only about $6-7 trillion in total held outside the US as foreign exchange. 😂
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I am not a US citizen, but this site s flooded with something which affects the world. Most opining haven't read history, not even recent history, and it's clear from what they say.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Look back at the range of antecedent causes. But okay, it's crucial now, I get that, but beware who you empower for the future.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Because replacing big money neoliberals for big money neoliberals is a long-term solution.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent

BBC needing arithmetic lessons... apparently 1957 was 52 years ago.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Was that also during Clinton's 'surplus years'? Be careful how you answer it will reveal a lot.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
A British politician?
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
In sum, yes. It's pretty old starting in the late '60s with business trying to dismantle the post-war consensus economy. A lot of propaganda. There are many parts to this. Politically the Powell Memorandum was a key part.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
When Clinton took power Dems had a senate/house majority. He could have pushed through single payer health reform. However there were background machinations. A lot of advisors pushing neoliberal economics, which they used to get centrist/right voters on board. So-called 'fiscal responsibility'.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Among other things. Abolishing the Glass-Steagall Act, reneging on healthcare promises, taking fiscal policy advice from neoliberals/monetarists.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm just answering questions. People ask or question a post I've made, and I answer. There is no playing. If it stops that's okay too.

When I first came to Utrecht it looked like the first image, now there's a hypermodern multi-storey bicycle park (largest in Europe I think).
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
The government owning parts of production isn't 'communism'. E.g. nationalised energy wouldn't be 'communism', just common sense.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Economist Warren Mosler once met Al Gore and explained to him how the govt wasn't money restricted, and Gore understood and agreed, but said it would be impossible to sell to the voting public. He then got up and made a typical neoliberal speech. It's crazy. True story.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
It marks the point neoliberalism became truly bipartisan.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
That's true. I don;t blame Clinton personally for that DOMA, but it's clear to see what a lot of the mainstream party were like. Some are still there.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, terrible fake.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Clinton's admin abolished the Glass-Steagall act. They also ran the first govt surpluses in most people's lifetimes. People seem to think that is good, but a govt surplus means the govt restricts spending (to less than taxation) which just runs down the public's income/savings. They bought the lie.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Fk me he's ugly!

Other people's cats might run away. My cat hates children.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Indeed. Also built upon a lie: that govt somehow doesn't have the money to afford it, but somehow the private user of the same money the govt issues by spending can afford it. A lot of people were born long after this started in the 70s/80s so they think it's normal and a mere political problem.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly right on the point of wasted infrastructure and labour blockages because they're all working in bloated insurance administration.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Surely that would just point to something looking real, which is a drawing? The most likely thing to be flagged. An ex-girlfriend of mine draws photo-realistic portraits and hers have also been 'flagged'.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I was locating the point in time when the party completely accepted the orthodox economic position. Nothing has changed since then.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I was talking about Bill Clinton.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Zero hours contract and nothing to do. It's more interesting working a pizza delivery scooter.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Which is why it should be a federal policy. States are currency-constrained as a matter of policy.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I should point out that once access is increased, resourcing matters. When access is low it appears that there are short wait times, buut it's only because many people are priced out. Once they're in things change. At that point a govt also has to work on policy to improve public health.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I think everyone would be happier at this point if Venezuela invaded the U.S.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
That said this has now been accepted as 'orthodoxy' and is why even the centre and left go on about 'finding money' and 'borrowing' and the rest. They failed to develop a rebuttal.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Spain's is also a total access system. So is Portugal's.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Well the NHS is entirely that model and only neoliberal policy has affected it. Prior to that it was the most money for value system with 100% access. The 100% access remains, but they have eroded the resourcing.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
I never said that. 'Neoliberal' is political-economic word for the right-wing adoption of neoclassical economics (like Monetarism) which itself claimed to be based-upon classical 'liberal' ideals.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Sad to think that some dullard 'hunter' would go for him.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
It really is simple. We see it happen: a person gets angry and in the heat of a moment they try to grab something to throw or use, whatever it is. When that thing is a gun the result is predictable.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Because he's an ordinary neoliberal and they think interest rate jiggling is effective economc policy. As it happens the best policy would be 0% (ZIRP) because it would kill off the bond market. I'm sure Trump is just exercising his arrgant will because someone said 'no', not because he understands.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Don't 'best of luck' me like you're an expert when you clearly aren't. All systems in a currency-issuing government system have a guaranteed 'funding' mechanism. That isn't their problem, but resourcing it. Because resources are taken by private use. You'll need to learn more to succeed with this.

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
They must have thought it was harder in the dark or something.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
They have been giving it lip-service then going to 'business as usual'. Clinton especially (and one his econ advisers started this thread!). Once the 'left' was fooled by monetarism and associated lies, they failed to develop a rebuttal and simply adopted it as the 'reality'.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
They only rely on that (and here in Western Europe) because they have deliberately built that model into fiscal policy. Not because it isn't achievable. Once you give the majority the option the private options atrophies considerably. See UK until the neoliberal turn.

Carswell is a particularly nasty character. For a long time he hid in plain sight as a mainstream Tory MP, but his ilk were always waiting for the rise of a right-wing nationalist party they could join. Scumbag that he is.

Anyone else noted the passing of Andy Arobieke, aka 'Purple Aki'? Anyone who lived in the north of England in the 80s and '90s will know what I mean.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
It is decently above the OECD avg though. I agree it could rise (and progressively), but this is not what is tying the chancellor's fiscal policy hands, it's their self-imposed 'fiscal rules'.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
For other people to get the pound the government (or a member bank, which is just a conduit for it) must first issue it.

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
That has nothing to do with this discussion. Why are you touting for business?
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Perhaps, the mega rich have clever means of acquiring money. They suck up a lot of direct govt spending & things like treasury bonds which are a free payday for the rich. Especially with those interest rates. This is different than govt's position though. Those credit ratings are irrelevant to them.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
No. I give them. Not to 'Ron Vara' though. He comes out with the same things you keep saying.

Population growth alone is not a cause of more tax redemptions. And in an economy insistent on avoiding fiscal policy to address unemplyment, even more so. Times lady doesn't know what she's talking about (as usual).
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
The UK only uses the pound. They don't take it from anywhere.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
No it is not. What do you mean 'additional funds'. The US govt has all the 'funds' it would ever need. That is not its problem. If you were talking about here in the Netherlands I would say 'yes' Euro user since it doesn't issue the currency it uses. But that's a different case.
Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent

Jacques Riverain (@jacquesriverain.bsky.social) reply parent
Another. Around 1939 US congress refused a $4bn investment in infrastructuire in the 'lease-spend' bill, apparently couldn't 'borrow'. In 1940 (when France fell) it had spent $300bn, didn't go 'bankrupt' and transformed the economy. How?
