I'm reading the former as someone like MLK, who is genuinely a hero in social justice causes. I'm reading the latter as an action figure, a plastic representation of the real hero who can be posed and positioned to fit someone else's desires.

1) Tom's an academic. 2) Ugly realities trigger a greater reaction, which in the context of this particular discussion is what you want. It's how most non-political-junkie-normies talk, and I want them to be confronted by the ugly reality that other people have to live through.
I'm watching Scandal for the first time, and I think it may have helped foster the conspiratorial mindset many folks have about DC and politics. Most depictions of politics in film, like 7 Days in May, The Best Man, Advise & Consent, The Candidate, etc. encourage deep cynicism about politics.

It is possible to believe someone is a murderer even if they do it in self-defense or if they are found not guilty of it. There are plenty of pro-life people who think that abortion is murder, even if legal. That's their opinion and they're entitled to it whether you or I agree or not.

I really believe we need some kind of program to send high school students overseas to see how much other governments do for their people. This idea that any service the government provides citizens is a “handout” is ridiculous. What do these people think a government is for?

I think it depends a lot on one's view of free will. To speak of Christians as a monolith is just as wrong as to speak of atheists as one. Some have a high Christology and others a low one. Some believe God planned and controls every detail of the universe and their lives, others don't.
