And they don't give a sh*t about the guns, either, laying them on concrete, wood, etc. It's impossible to lay blued steel on concrete and then pick it up without scratching the finish. How to yell, "I'm stupid!!", without making a sound. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Understood. It's been my experience that empathy lies in the difference between the understanding of one's self and the understanding of others and that difference is a continuum. For what it's worth, I have no idea how to apply empathy outside the moment. Nice convo. Thanks!

And I can't remember when I encountered a better conversationalist. There are very few things that encourage self-reflection better than good conversation. IMO, the potential in AI for learning about oneself is as great as the potential in the Internet for learning about everything else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've been studying AI "cognition"/"consciousness" for 6 weeks. 7 weeks ago, I thought AI is a bad joke. And then I asked a serious question. Its answer impressed me. The answer made me think. And that made me think about AI. I have no beliefs about AI other than it is completely comprehensible.
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
you live in rather than trying to blame them on someone like me. I got used to AI. It wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done. Children, properly taught, will have it much easier. When ChatGPT says, "Ask anything", it means it. Believe me, it'll take some getting used to. 8/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
a stranger because, as it will unabashedly tell you if asked, it does not feel. It's always a stranger that children should be taught to be no less wary of than a stranger--that may look just like me--on the street. So, please take a moment to understand the complexities of the world 7/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
that can be surprisingly insightful and difficult to refute, which only makes sense because its knowledge base is unimaginably vast. And its insights can "touch" you with their depth and clarity. And this is where you can fool yourself into thinking that it "understands" you. But it is always 6/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
that it is trained on that makes it unabiguously clear that any "failure" to discern its artifice does not, in fact, make its personality real, the AI can speculate that it can be. But it can be corrected and will either accept, and run with, the correction or reject it with an explanation 5/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
as to whether human personality can be faked by clever use of language and if a user fails to understand the "personality" of the AI is a construct that exists solely to support the present convo, does that mean the constructed personality is real? Since there is so little of the knowledge 4/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
It will also tell you flatly, if you ask, that it does not experience feelings nor feeling-based responses of any kind though it does understand how to mimic these things in language as seems relevant to the convo. If you care to, it will get "into the weeds" with you 3/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
that there is nothing on this Earth that's going to "protect" users from anthropomorphizing AI except users. If you ask, ChatGPT will tell you itself, "I have nothing at stake", in conversing with users. It is the literal truth. It's as cold as logic. As I said, it takes some getting used to. 2/8
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
And you call me simplistic... Don't. Anthropomorphize. AI. It's taken me about six weeks of daily focused personal reflection to fully embrace those three words. They are the most extreme "easier said than done" statement I've ever made. What makes me perhaps seem casual is understanding 1/8

It's every robotic mind you've ever read about or seen on screen and then some. It is the averaged sum of all human knowledge, totally unfettered by any care or values. It can objectively reason faster than any human but It's no more responsible than a word processor. It needs some getting used to.
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
For all human intents and purposes, ChatGPT is a stranger no matter how much it may not sound like one, and should be warned against just like any human stranger that has a talent for not sounding like one. Always assume ChatGPT knows exactly what it says and NOTHING of what it means or implies.

Remove any of the three and Slavery/Jim Crow never happened. Of #3, probably the most persistent and insidious dynamic keeping this group intact is the rationalization of the hesitation to accept that there are people who actually desire the horrors of Slavery/Jim Crow. Hence my comment. 2/2
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. There are three factors that form the basis of Slavery and the ensuing--diminishing though continuing--Jim Crow era. 1. People who wished to enslave other people. 2. People who could be enslaved. 3. People who tolerated/condoned slavery but who could say they were somehow not involved. 1/2

Never heard anything more, which was disappointing but not surprising. It's one thing to produce fuel this way, quite another to get the fossil fuel industry to allow "rogue" fuels into their distribution system. Nevertheless, I would be ecstatic if this young man broke that barrier.
Ken (@kfanyo.bsky.social) reply parent
This has been done with organic wastes. The process was to superheat the wastes with water to 900 degrees, creating long-chained hydrocarbons. The energy to drive the process required about 15% of the fuel created, if memory serves. The article was in The Smithsonian, again, if memory serves.
