We need a literal ‘bike math play book’. Plug in the practice real world activations of riding a bike ~ Environment, Physical and Mental Health, Productivity, Accessibility and Equity (data nerd here) then a direct link to our elected municipal rep pressuring them to vote against car dependency.

I do think what it does do perfectly is set a bar of what’s real, what isn’t and how within the urbanist community do we start to craft true form narratives to highlight climate change, prioritize the safety of vulnerable road users and decouple ourselves from car dependency. #TransformTO

Not a dunk. Sitting on the Climate Advisory Group for Toronto It’s a useable & tangible example of misinformation that still used by elected official here in my very own city. “No one cycles in the winter so why should we prioritize infrastructure that isn’t going to be utilized.” #GoldenOldies

#ICYMI It’s Sept 1st but also your friendly reminder that winter starts TODAY! Please pack away your bicycles, e-bikes, tricycles, cargo bikes & such. 1. Sep 2. Oct 3. Nov 4. Dec 5. Jan 6. Feb 7. Mar 8. Apr Expected snowfall across Canada will be overwhelming. If you’re able, work from home!

Emmett Macfarlane @EmmMacfarlane I'm all for upping bike infrastructure but we're a country with winter 6-8 months a year and an average home-to-work commute time of like an hour driving so I don't think bikes are gonna be the panace some people seem to think they'll be. * CBC KW @CBCKW891 - 2021-11-10 Bikes took a back seat at COP26. Devastating. Would absolutely get behind a full tilt campaign to have drivers prioritize the lives of vulnerable road users here in #TOPoli but here we are…

Toronto Police & @TorontoPolice X.com We have a campaign over the next few weeks to enforce and educate the rules of the road for users of micromobility vehicles such as bicycles and electric bikes and scooters. Let's be predictable and share the road to keep everyone safe.

Since March 2021, the Library has received 2 community petitions and requests to withdraw the book Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier from the Library’s collection. We have assessed the book against Halifax Public Libraries’ Collection Development Policy & the Canadian Federation of Library Associations’ Statement on Intellectual Freedom, opens a new window & have made the decision to not censor the book. Community conversations and collaboration In response to community concerns, we hosted conversations with community members & groups. We believe in the power of community conversations & collaboration—they allow us to find new & innovative ways to use our Library platform for positive change. Through our consultation & conversation with community members regarding this title, we have come to understand more deeply the trauma that is disproportionately experienced by the trans community & to appreciate the community’s resilience in the face of transphobia. Our commitment to open dialogue & intellectual freedom Public libraries exist to provide equal access to resources for everyone & support individuals’ freedom to seek information & form their own opinions. When we act to suppress access, we engage in censorship. In addition to our community conversations, we have worked to identify additional resources and new ways to promote and make available the most recent and relevant trans-affirming works in our collection. Beyond our collection, we will continue to look for new opportunities to expand programming, provide space, and build connections to support the trans community while also educating the broader public. Halifax Public Libraries is committed to supporting trans people and the broader LGBTQ2S+ community. We can work together, collaboratively, to elevate trans voices, and create more compassion and understanding for marginalized experiences. We know our conversations will continue. #FYI “Running from today until Saturday, September 13, this campaign will focus on education and enforcement of micromobility users on local, collector, and arterial roads, including bike lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks.” Toronto Police Services www.tps.ca/media-centre...

MICROMOBILITY ENFORCEMENT INCREASING AUGUST 25 - SEPTEMBER 13 Image of an EV, e bike and e scooter MEDIA CENTRE Corporate Communications responds to all Media Requests and produces News Releases, Factsheets, Feature Stories and Videos as well as maintains tps.ca News Release Toronto Police Service increasing enforcement of micromobility vehicles Unit: Traffic Services C Published: Monday, August 25, 2025, 8:00 AM Today, the Toronto Police Service is launching a three-week traffic safety enforcement campaign focusing on micromobility vehicles across Toronto. As more and more people operate these vehicles, education and enforcing the law is more important than ever, especially as the back-to-school season begins. Running from today until Saturday, September 13, this campaign will focus on education and enforcement of micromobility users on local, collector, and arterial roads, including bike lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks. As students head back to school, officers will also concentrate on traditional school zone safety, paying close attention to drivers who choose to speed; drive aggressively, distracted or impaired; and park or drive within cycle lanes. Micromobility vehicles describe small, compact, low-speed vehicles. They can include bicycles, electric bikes, e-mopeds, electric kick-scooters (e-scooters), and more. Officers will educate members of the public and enforce the Highway Traffic Act and City of Toronto by-laws on all micromobility vehicles for this campaign. This campaign is in response to a City Council recommendation for Toronto Police and City of Toronto to collaborate on an educational campaign and enforcement blitzes to enhance public awareness of micromobility-related safety issues, including illegal sidewalk riding, wrong way riding in cycle tracks, illegal e-moped use in cycle tracks, and illegal parking in bike lanes. The City of Toronto's educational campaign began this summer, and Toronto Police have been working closely with the City as part of this education and enforcement initiative. This enforcement campaign also builds on the 'Safe Rides, Safe Streets' campaign conducted by Traffic Services officers in November 2024, but will extend service-wide with a broader focus on education and enforcement. It makes no difference what kind of operator you are, whether operating a motor vehicle or a micromobility vehicle, the laws of the road apply to all.

Home News Study finds Montreal cycling infrastructure doesn’t match demand New measure shows micromobility takes up just 2% of road space, despite a measurable need for more in certain boroughs Published: 18 August 2025 Bike lanes, BIXI stations and other micromobility infrastructure make up just two per cent of Montreal’s street space – even in neighbourhoods where cycling demand would justify more – according to a new study by McGill University researchers. They think that the measure they developed to arrive at their findings can also help assess the situation in other cities. “This is best used as a diagnostic tool for where there’s too little space,” said Daniel Romm, a PhD candidate in McGill’s Department of Geography and lead author of the study. “It’s very intuitive: square metres per traveler is a simple way to understand whether infrastructure is keeping up with demand.” While city planners may know how many kilometres of bike lanes exist, this study calculated how much area is dedicated to micromobility relative to the full road network and compare that with how people actually travel. The team combined high-resolution street geometry data from the City of Montreal with regional travel surveys. The Equal Infrastructure Allocation tool The study introduces a new measure called the Equal Infrastructure Allocation (EIA) score, which compares how much dedicated infrastructure space is available per traveler, for different modes of transport. The researchers hope it will help city planners explain and defend reallocation projects that often face public opposition from drivers. “If people had a better understanding of how little space it takes, because it’s such a space-efficient transport mode, maybe they would be less upset about giving some of that space to a cyclist,” said Romm. While the EIA score was developed for Montreal, the researchers say their methods are easily adaptable to other cities. Applying the approach elsewhere could help expose inequities in street design and support efforts to build safer, more equitable transportation systems. About the study “The cars are going to be alright: Examining micromobility infrastructure space allocation and potential improvement scenarios in Montréal,” by Daniel Romm, José Arturo Jasso Chávez, Lexi Kinman, Pegah Salsabilian, Grant McKenzie and Kevin Manaugh, was published in the Journal of Cycling and Micromobility Research. This research was supported by McGill University through the McGill Sustainability Systems Initiative (MSSI), the Fonds de recherche du Québec, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, and made use of data provided by the City of Montréal, the Agence de mobilité durable, BIXI Montréal, the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM), and Statistics Canada. image
