Crime is literally lower than it has been in the entire life of every single non-senior-citizen American. If you are under age 65 you have never lived at a time with lower property crime rates, lower violent crime rates or lower homicide rates. Never.
This happened to a friend of mine who was on his way to get a joint MD-PhD concurrently at Harvard and MIT. Today he is an internationally recognized scientist running a lab that developed a groundbreaking COVID test (as a side project!). If it can happen to him, it can happen to you.

The concept of “gratitude” in American politics is an insidious one that implies a caste system where betters confer largess upon lessers and where those lessers must consistently pay homage to their betters. And there is always an implied threat that without proper homage the largess will stop.
It’s not enough for them to hold power. They need to be loved in a way their behavior will never make possible, and they lack the self-awareness to understand why they never get it.

There wouldn’t be an ever-growing army of masked, unaccountable secret police with the largest budget in the history of law enforcement. There would be someone qualified running HHS instead of someone wrecking it. Scientific research would still be one of this country’s greatest draws.

Not that I get my news from the same sources as your dad’s friend, but in the COMICS (not the movie), Lois and Clark now have a grown son who a) is gay, and b) (sometimes confusingly) also calls himself Superman. I imagine right wing media made a whole meal of that.
I saw Superman and, based on the right-wing freakout, I was fully expecting something deeply political. I’ve never seen a more straightforward good vs evil movie. It was the kind of good vs evil story that you make for small children, naturally. What a way for the MAGA crowd to tell on themselves.
