That I don't know. But its a crap situation for academic researchers as there is no real long term career structure. I'm a scientist so the move to industry was an option for me. But for other fields it does look almost impossible to stay in your field and have any sort of long stability.
In my experience the postdoc merry go round is why so many good researchers leave academia, make the compromises, and go to join industry for the permanent contract.
