My wife and a few of her colleagues went to picket for the teachers union this afternoon at a nearby major intersection. Apparently they only were called libtards once. ... And the obligatory, "I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it" -Mitch hedberg

Today Trevor Story hit what is being called the 2nd shortest HR in MLB history at 306ft (pic1) The shortest (non inside the park) HR is credited to Lorenzo Cain, also at the Pesky Pole in Fenway (pic2) By what metric is the ball that goes over a guys head shorter than the one that hits the pole?

The oft forgotten decimal! Mostly unrelated, but the "pick a number" bit reminds me of the game where everybody picks a number 0-100 and the idea is to guess closest to ⅔ (or ½) of the average. Inevitably there is somebody who picks 75 and it's really hard not to mock them.

Yeah, my wish are things outside the standard Stewart/ Larson instruction, whatever. DeltaMath/ Kura problems... Those have a place, but aren't unique I want a place for engaging, creative, unique tasks outside the norm. They're out there, just hard to find in the moment you want/ need one.

The one i was trying to make had thumbnails of the activity, so you could at least get some insight right away, saving time digging through the weeds My vision is it needs to be unique tasks to make the cut, which in theory, eliminates 95% of the things that are already widely available/ redundant

I haven't had much luck getting chatGPT to actually engage with much higher level math (and I mean HS, not even the actually complex stuff) at a baseline level... i have minimal, if any faith, it could create actual engaging, meaningful, tasks.

To me a good task is less focused on the outcome, and more about providing a space for students to explore, to observe, see potential connections... the results can be solidified later. The collection of quality tasks is the most critical part.

My thought was minimize effort. I had it developed as a thumbnail image of the thing and a one sentence description. Too often there is way too much digging to find tasks. Blogs are great, but people talk about their process for 3pgs before sharing the document. Make the thing known within seconds

When I had students do this, it had a very student centric curricula. They were used to playing around with the material, usually a bit round about, then we'd solidify/ formalize the concepts as a class. The derivation of the product rule activity I used was pretty awesome...

I feel like for most HS math teachers, that's the class. Every school has the "stats guru," when they move on somebody else is assigned to it and has to re-learn it all (and thus become the next "stats guru")

embrace the feeling and be honest with yourself and your students. "I don't know, let's try to figure it out" It's terrifying but also extremely enlightening to feel like our students again.

When i did my data science program we had to do an analysis of standardized test data... everybody in my class tied it into academic performance. I, the educator, brought in affluence, participation rate, political leanings... Bookended with these 2 slides...

The lack of respect and having to constantly prove myself to people who never actually stepped into my classroom was one of the reasons I ultimately decided to leave teaching (even with the support of "the data")

I just got a notice from my bank for a potential unauthorized charge on my credit card I appreciate that they're monitoring for such a thing. However, this particular charge is with a company where I've had an automatically reoccurring order for over a year...

I honestly wonder what they have as the correct answer to #2... and how they balance the actual answer with what is happening in their state.

I want to believe you, but can you please support your claim with quantifiable data? (sarcasm, if it wasn't obvious) Teaching methods, professional knowledge, content proficiency, grading practices, jeans... seems like every part of teacher professionalism is questioned these days

Life as the spouse of an educator The 10yo is on a new soccer team. My wife wanted to make a pocket cheatsheet to have at games: kid name, Jersey #, parent name.. This afternoon she says "I made the name card!" I, half-jokingly, ask "did you laminate it yet?" "No, I took the laminator to school"

The first election after moving to SF was when he was running for mayor. It was him (dem) vs a green party candidate. I voted for the other guy. Even back then he came across as this slick aspiring career politician.

One of my go to dad/teacher jokes was the first time I made a mistake in class (aka the first week) a student would correct me, "oh yeah, thanks. I'm not very good with numbers" S who knew me rolled their eyes S who didn't would have this look of horror "but... but... You're my math teacher"

Nah, it was just kids not paying attention. They had split the teams into 2 buildings alphabetically. We had discussed if we were going by city name or school name. Half went to the wrong one. On the flip side, I won the individual competition. My biggest math geek achievement.

In HS I was at a math competition at washU. We had a team test, half the team went to the wrong building on the other side of campus. I, the athlete, had to sprint across campus and get the other kids back in 10mins. That was the day I decided I needed a bigger university.
