A reminder that all the war-horny chickenhawks who've never served think the military is entirely infantry and not a single job can be performed, even temporarily, with a minimum of exertion. Why not kick soldiers recovering from surgery out too?
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
The wild irony, well worth noting, is that Musk has exploded in rage at Ukraine for fighting back when violence actually did come for them. Violence is his personal pet, it seems.

Anybody ever expect to see Michael Tracey of all people just body somebody like this?

Seeing zei_squirrel there reminds me that multiple polar opposites individuals will hate-69 each other in parasocial online relationships to legitimize their most insane views by ball-flicking the most insane views of their nutcase fuck partner.

I mean yeah also a fair point, but that's an equally not-a-pro move.

Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Like I said in the next reply, anybody with the sense to aim center mass would have the sense to take that into account, because headshots are needlessly flash. But I suspect if he knew to aim center mass he'd have taken that into account. But either way, not a pro and not a trick shot.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh no no no, they'll pretend Bella Ciao is the kind of reference a twenty something would make to an 80 plus-year-old Italian song and not a contemporary Groyper meme.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
And nobody aims for the neck. Like you just don't go for carotid/jugular/spine shots. Either that or he over-estimated the distance and was trying to hit the torso, but I doubt that, given that center mass is the more professional, less flash move -- and anybody doing that would zero properly.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
It was also a botched shot that got lucky. I'm guessing he did some Kentucky windage and set his zero short -- maybe 100 yards instead of 200 -- and aimed for the head but hit the neck due to drop. Because with a properly zeroed scope on a stationary target it should have hit at the crosshair.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
He had a groyper meme on one, a reference to Helldivers on another, a vaguely homophobic reference on a third. Which was anti fascist?
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
It's like reading Der Angriff being angry at somebody. Good on whoever they're angry at, and fuck them. (Let's not forget Kirk didn't just send busloads of people to Jan 6 -- he bragged about cons wanting a civil war before he sent them. He knew. Defender of democracy and free speech my ass)

It's only stochastic terrorism when somebody left of Pinochet comments what the reactions might be to an event that already happened. It's Freeze Peach 🥶 🍑 when they do this.

I remember when Charlie Kirk was Very Mad that a WNBA player was treated better than a US Marine. And here they're making him a hypocrite in death. Sad.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Time for Weedlord Bonerhitler and Piss Children to make a return. Or we could all just post Kirk's on words and turn it into a searchable database of Kirk's greatest hits under "Charlie's Murderers". Anyway nice to see the right now believes full throated in stochastic terrorism.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social)
I mean apparently if you're a college dropout grifter you get treated better than a United States Marine, so, there's Kirk, being a hypocrite even in death
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
In his case, he truly was an asshole who reveled in cruelty masquerading as debate. He did politics all wrong, as a predatory chickenhawk. Doesn't matter, still can't murder him just 'cause.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
It's worth mentioning that we needn't have this hagiography. It was people like Kirk who assured us because Floyd was a "Bad Person" it wasn't murder. The smear was false, but it doesn't matter if it were true. Being a "Bad Person" isn't a cheat to avoid rule of law. Same goes for Kirk's killing.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
See Charlie there too

extremely interesting indicator of where we are in postmodern syncretism that the guys making Kirk out to be a hero of the Christian faith will simply not comment on a Hindu proposing that he is now in the afterlife of Norse Paganism.

We got a weird fizzle from Medvedev rambling, as he does, about the "Banderite Kiev regime", which is somewhat surprising given how much Kirk lashed out at Ukraine.

"yes your honor my reputation was permanently damaged by the horrendous, risible accusation that I think one floor is safe to jump off I demand ONE MILLION DOLLARS!" Relax man.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. So are shots to the femoral artery, and they're obviously not the kind of shots you take because the target isn't typically as good as other targets you can aim at.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh it obviously wasn't the intended shot. Nobody, nobody aims for the neck. It's the head if you want to be fancy, not the neck. And if you don't want to be fancy and just want to guarantee a hit, it's the torso. The neck was, from the shooter's perspective, a very lucky fuck-up.

Criminalizing cheering on and celebrating political violence ironically would have ironically saved Kirk's life given he'd have been in jail.

What he built, the speed he built it, and the speaking to attract others was born out of his disingenuous bullshit. It's the same reason mainstream religions take centuries of organizing while insane death cults set up in less than ten years. There is no need for consistency or an effort at truth

The notion, from Russia, that *if* Ukraine continues to exist, it would do so as a rump/puppet state rather than an independent nation. And of course that involves choking off resources and ports, but not because they are economically important to Russia in the traditional -- normal -- sense of it.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social)
Well, yes and no. It's not about seizing control of those resources because Russia wants them for itself. It's about seizing them to deny a non-compliant, independent post-Maidan Ukraine the ability to economically develop itself in conjunction with the EU.

Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
And they're wrong. And the notion that mere training data in any form, pirated/stolen or not, is a violation is also wrong.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
It's reasonable that at some point, a dev hands off their product to a user, no matter how much predictive text or algorithmic image gen it might engage in, and at the point where users are invited to use it, and it requires those users to interact to generate something, the result isn't the devs'.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Conversely, if it were the devs' expression, then are the devs liable for, say, copy vio? I would assume not, because I can't imagine it being their expression, anymore than I can imagine Microsoft or Adobe claiming their expression over what I write in Word or draw in Photoshop.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
That tying the devs expression to the output is -- and it is here I go back to the concept of authorship -- like trying to say the dev is expressing him or herself through a machine. Not with a machine as an instrument, but through a machine just running and other people using it.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
It's here that the argument is lost on me. The machine is just doing what it is programmed to do in any language it's been fed. It does it without further intervention of the dev, in languages the dev doesn't know, by prompts generated not by the dev but the user. It's so removed from the dev...
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, hence why the intervention is the user's. But you could go to an LLM that has taken say Lithuanian training data from a coder who fed it Lithuanian literature without knowing a word of it. The code itself is expressive, but are we suggesting the Lithuanian output is an expression of the dev?
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
That there's no intervention between the training and the generation on the part of the company owning the LLM? There's a lot of expression for what the company does otherwise, but what the LLM pukes out is arguably -- if anything -- more the expression of the user than the company.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
In terms of understanding whether or not expression can be vested in an animal or machine, it's a perfectly good guidepost. The question isn't, can it be copyrighted, the question is, do we have some basis, anywhere, to think this doesn't count as expression as we mean it.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
By that measure anybody who feeds paper into a paper shredder owns whatever comes out as their own expression. The LLM gets some training text -- like a macaque with a camera or the paper shredder -- and then does ~whatever~ without human authority or authorship.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
I doubt generating responsive text is expressive for the simple reason that a human isn't generating it. That a human took steps to generate it I doubt would even qualify as human intervention for the sake of machine-generated works being copyrightable, and that's as good a guidepost as any.
Matthew Best (@matthewbest.bsky.social) reply parent
Can you be left out of the conversation for other reasons as well?
