He got a lot of attention in 2016 because the media hate Hillary Clinton, so the promoted & protected him. He got addicted to the attention. Now all he does is do & say things to get attention. The media only covers him when he is slamming Democrats.
Trump voters did that & they are proud of it. They are ignorant, hateful bigots. The suffering of others brings them joy.

It's not so much a mistake as a desperate hope. Right now there are no other ways to get messages out to the general public. The mainstream media, especially the NYT & WaPo, are hostile to Democrats, but where else can people go?
