Couple of things: 1) @drugmonkey.bsky.social is multiplying the MYF grants by 4 here, so the real number of missing new R grants is over 2,000. 2) it's very variable from IC to IC. The NCI is currently at 31%, which is just awful. The NIAAA is a shell of it's former self at just 7%.

Logical advice but currently we are dealing with study sections getting 80-100 grants, and out of those <4 have a chance. Reviewers can communicate the merit skillfully & recommend a 1-2 range but it basically comes down to a few committee members giving it a 2 vs 1 for the score to go from 6% to 3%

It's not a criticism. It's just how we are used to processing things. A 1%ile grant getting skipped was very rare and likely for very different reasons compared to now. I just don't see any value in the comparison tbh.

I get it, and I know the data, but this is precisely the problem that scientists face right now. We're programmed to rationalize and look for patterns in data and scream "look, we've seen this before!!" My take: we're comparing apples to oranges here and any attempt to normalize this is damaging.

It is interesting that NIH percentile ranks may or may not mean anything anymore, depending upon factors such as institutional dysfunction. This might be the bleakest I've felt about the future of the NIH since a lot of this stuff can't be reversed.

I honestly don't think scores mean much of anything right now. I think how functional and/or aligned with OMB/WH your main IC is is probably the main factor. Lets face it: they have successfully destroyed the NIH as we all know it.

Okay, that was just for new awards. It's actually much more bleak looking at total awards and allocations through the same point last year. NIGMS is short over 1,600 R01 equivalents and has spent over $1B less (~30%) compared to this date last year.

For NIDDK, I see 5 new R01s issued since 8/8, 4 of which were A1s. Since 7/1, only 28 new R01s have been issued (15 A1s). Seems very low, but having trouble using Reporter on my phone to look at FY24. From what I can tell, only 1/28 are MYF. So why exactly are the paylines so low?

Few examples: 1) understand where the payline is and what score compression looks like. I suspect a 1 will be required. Maybe 1 or 2 apps will be funded per SS. 2) be kind to ESI/NI and other discriminated groups 3) maybe drop the whole "this is an A1 but I'm going to pretend it's not" approach.

Sadly not true anymore. Mine was pending, did a JIT (including bloody IRB approval as it's a clinical study) then suddenly pulled from paylist when paylines were cut in late July. Brutal experience.
