Schweik is a little more like Sancho Panzo without Quixote - he's certainly smarter than he lets on, but he's so good at playing the fool that he even fools himself. Tolkein seems rarely satirical, so it may not be a good parallel.
Michael Hartford (@mhartford.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if Tolkein was aware of "The Good Soldier Schweik"? Schweik doesn't save the world - he barely saves himself - but he bumbles through world historical events, and seems like a distant cousin at least of hobbits.

I love a soundtrack like this! Every song from "Sing Street" could have been a hit in 1985, the year the movie is set - "Girls" is clearly a lost Joe Jackson track, and "Drive It Like You Stole It" would definitely have sat at the top of the charts for two weeks or more.
