This platform does not afford the space to debate a complex matter. I'll reduce this to the Chinese proverb "give a man a fish..." Thinking of money alone is blinkered by the same attitude that created the mess. That of individualistic gain, economy over sustainability, and ignoring cause & effect.
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
You're making it about economy and costs. That's the very counter-point I'm trying to make ....this is bigger than finance.
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
The panic is inherent from witnessing the scorched koalas, beached whales, starved polar bears, millions of displaced peoples.... it would be lovely to live in a bubble of wilful ignorance, though some of us choose to acknowledge the horrors, and their root causes.
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
Counter-argument not as much of a 'gotcha' as you might think. Unless you aren't aware that fossil fuels are becoming increasingly expensive to extract (greater depths, higher risk locations...)?
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
I like the message, though it is a fairly long-winded way of saying that real altruism doesn't seek reward.

Because most people have a stake in something that they don't want to risk losing if the whole thing implodes... a personal investment, a lengthy mortgage, a nepotistic career progression, a leased car, a healthcare plan, some cash under the bed...
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, they didn't grift, create meme stocks, launch NFTs, flog branded Bibles, and conduct flagrant market manipulations in real time, so hardly comparable.

I think we've reached the point where we need to let him keep on doing it, getting away with it (for now), and we'll see how shockingly swollen the US public at large is willing to see the President's personal coffers become. Everything is on public record.

Thinking aloud...can a nation put a tariff on trade in another's currency? Because that feels like it could get potentially wild for any nation whose currency happens to be used unofficially for trade in provinces the world over.

Interesting piece. When in doubt, I tend to favour deferring to a pronunciation as close to the etymological root (4thC BC Greek) as possible. In this case, pronouncing 'Chrysocolla' similarly to 'Chrysanthemum' (with a soft 'y', emphasis on second syllable, ending on an 'olla', not 'Β‘Hola!').

Mass, deliberate killing of non-military citizens within a country... You don't think that's happening?
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, in the 90s, the buzz term was "ethnic cleansing". And in the decades preceding that it was "the fog of war". The fact that any genocide is still happening now, in this hyper-information age, is truly shocking.

I think you need to understand Edinburgh. This street is South Bridge. It's built entirely on raised brick arches. Again, not suited to trees. Eye-roll.
michaelwhi.bsky.social (@michaelwhi.bsky.social) reply parent
I humbly invite you to visit the fair City of Edinburgh, if you haven't already. It's one of the greenest cities there is. Trees everywhere. Except for the igneous outcrops, and the odd poorly conceived urban development.

Um, that particular street is built atop a former volcanic crag. Basically, very solid, dense rock with no soil. Ergo no trees.
