Here's behind the scenes: Whenever raycaster draws a wall, it constructs it in the out of view corner, then memcpy to the sprite sheet to be rendered. Similar hack for the mixed vertical type on books. Fun taking advantage of the reduced screen size rather than it just being a limitation.

Started on a raycast game for #lowrezjam over weekend. Got a special rendering system working. Shelf sprites are generated on the fly in unused space, so each is unique. Started making the basic retrieval task system, moving towards a tiny library sim. #pico8 #pixelart #gamedev

Had a bad idea: weapons also have an inventory for ammo. Inventories all the way down! Bug of the day: can fire empty casings as well. Use the whole bullet! Does open up to non ejecting guns like break action shotguns. #gamedev

Oscillating between combat or merchant sim. Jack and Casie is the guiding star for combat, though fear ripping it off. I should focus on a playtest build, and stop tracing more weapons/adding bespoke inventory interactions, but ahh I want reimplement Tetris shape collision boxes. Such is life.

I got stuck doing commands in the console like p8 rather than using the desktop. And the ram vs disk confused for a while. Needed to setup to have it really work as wanted, downloading tools off the forum for extra functionality and modding the editor a bit. Comfy now but took longer setup than p8.

Doing stress testing to track down bugs on duplication and placement. Since cig packs currently cycle between open and closed when destroyed, they overtake the other items.

Working on the save system for longform testing and avoid later headaches with structure. Since can only save trees, on save I prune the data, then on load feed the data back into same init functions and regen the non-persistent values with default values. #picotron #pixelart #gamedev #indiedev

Implementing shops and loot tables. Also terrible knockoff firearm names. I like Stoneshard's loop of buy supplies->dungeon delve->loot valuables->sell for upgrades and resupply. The way supplies gets used up opens up space for vendor trash works very well. #picotron #gamedev #pixelart #indiedev

Testing out palette swapping for day/night cycle. Seems intrusive so might go for a custom dark draw palette and/or fading the colors more gradually. Enjoying having more purple shades by default, Pico-8's palette is very limited in that department. #picotron #pixelart #indiedev #gamedev

WIP title screen. Got combat transition from the overworld down and did rebalancing on the survival stats today. Having a keyboard for hotkeys makes actions real quick to preform! Noticed M1911 is oversized to other weapons so made accurate Glock to compare. #picotron #pixelart #indiedev #gamedev

Chief, among many others! UI is dead giveaway lol. Reading Daniel Fedor's blog posts on Neo, I find the design thought process fascinating. The game itself is deliberately opaque about mechanics, so reading about the playtesting and revisions that went into that balance is quite illuminating.

Finishing edits to Sushi Belt to send off to Magfest usb compilation. Added an attract screen. Since its pico8, I can't fit a whole video so did the next best thing: record inputs and then play back them back with same srand seed. Perfect replication! #pico8 #gamedev #indiedev #pixelart

Improving UX for the inventory and doing a mini stress test with a bunch of items. Turned out quick sort was hogging CPU so switched to insertion sorting. Works great now, tackling the equipment system next! #picotron #gamedev #pixelart #retrogaming
