Matthew Willis (Naval Air History) (@navalairhistory.com) reply parent
It really doesn’t. Slightly damp road, two swerves - to avoid the pheasant, then to avoid the kerb, and the car broke grip and went around. I’d have been really interested to see how it looked from the cars behind I’d also be interested to know how fast texting woman was going - it looked fast

But overall, yes, Red Bull has tended to chew up and spit out drivers who aren’t the favoured wunderkind. Webber and Ricciardo were both very competitive against Vettel and Max respectively but it was clear that politically the management were always going to favour their teammates
Matthew Willis (Naval Air History) (@navalairhistory.com) reply parent
The issue with Ricciardo and Kvyat was slightly different. Kvyat had been underperforming but he was improving and they really wanted an excuse to put Max in the senior team for PR. Ricciardo was competitive with Max in 2016-18 but he left because he could see the way the wind was blowing
Matthew Willis (Naval Air History) (@navalairhistory.com) reply parent
Sainz never drove for the senior Red Bull team - he absolutely should have done but I suspect they didn’t put him in there because when he was teammates with Max at Toro Rosso they got very competitive with each other…

Yes, that’s true. Most adaptations seem to make them indestructible rather than just very powerful. I suppose you could say that the scene near the end of the Spielberg version where the US military takes out an already ailing tripod with MANPADs is influenced by it

These days you could make it an environmental theme. Protect the biome and it will protect us against the Martians (If I could be bothered I would make up a ‘he attac/he protec’ meme with a microbe)
Matthew Willis (Naval Air History) (@navalairhistory.com) reply parent
And if they had these tripods waiting here for millennia, would they not also have been analysing the environment for things like microbes?
Matthew Willis (Naval Air History) (@navalairhistory.com) reply parent
Now I think about it some more, it would work narratively if you balanced it against the main character’s actions in some way. So, it’s the Martians’ hubris that makes them vulnerable to tiny microbes where the main character realises their humility before nature can save them, or something
