If your main sport is basketball, doing soccer in the fall and tennis in the spring are probably perfect complements in terms of the physical skills you develop. But until you get skilled those sports they're pretty much just running around. Not every hooper will be a Steve Nash-esque athlete.

People like to get pedantic about this and it has admittedly changed a bit but this still seems true for the vast majority of non-famous people

I think the casual racism/xenophobia from a fairly normie Asian would curl the toes of even center-right people in the US.

Wondering how long they tolerate Bruenig, who I have my issues with but at least he doesn't do the civility shtick.

At its core, reactionary centristism is just fancy people made they're being made fun of. It's why I support bringing back dueling. It'd be way less tedious than this discourse.
Obvious Pseudonym (@obviouspseudonym.bsky.social) reply parent
I've never understood why 'popularists' go out of their way to be so viscerally annoying. If your whole shtick is to be broadly appealing, constantly acting like a scoldy, abrasive dickhead is a strange way to conduct yourself.
Obvious Pseudonym (@obviouspseudonym.bsky.social) reply parent
That'd probably be fine. I'd prefer former wrestlers.

Honestly, a college degree requirement as a minimum qualification to be a professional violence worker probably gets you 80% of the way there.

I have lost my mind countless times over the fact educated people have tried arguing that schools are not vectors for respiratory illnesses. Just admit you wanted your kids out of the house to get some peace and quiet.

Wild take from Cuban. A huge part of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry was black people not from Los Angeles liking Magic and white people outside of Boston liking Larry Bird. Some of that fandom was for basketball-related reasons and some of it was uh...not.

I don't trust experts, unless it's the guy at my gym selling me questionably sourced gear out of the trunk of his car. Then they're cool.

I think it's as simple as blaming Rupert Murdoch.
Obvious Pseudonym (@obviouspseudonym.bsky.social) reply parent
My experience w/ small-time landlords has been pretty good. If you're quiet & reliably pay, they're less eager to jack up your rent because they don't want the pain of finding another decent tenant. Corporate landlords OTOH, will bloodlessly apply their algorithm and find your exact pain point.

I mean, I did say it was a crank theory! (The other counterpoint people have pointed out is the rise in environmental consciousness - people were more hesitant to pave over wetlands or build on steep slopes just to create a perfect grid system)
Obvious Pseudonym (@obviouspseudonym.bsky.social) reply parent
My crank theory that I nevertheless believe has some validity is that the rise in cul-de-sacs is the post Civil Rights era is an evolution in the attempt to physically segregate white homeowners from "those people" while still passing legal muster.

I watched Marc Maron's recent interview on Pod Save American and he went out of his way to mention this video twice. I am normally a "No fucking way I'm watching a 90-minute YouTube video" guy but in this case I can't recommend this video strongly enough. Apotheosis of the video essay format.

I like it - one of the knocks against Sara Gideon in 2020 is she wasn't a lifelong Mainer. I think that's stupid, but the people of Maine elected Paul LePage twice, Jared Golden is a thing, & did a Biden-Collins ticket split despite razor thin Senate margins, so yeah they deserve a dumb campaign.

I don't care if Osborn has the politics of Joe Manchin or slightly worse. I think it's cool if he wants to run as an independent because of the (D) brand in Nebraska. Caucus with the Dems like Bernie or Angus King and work to crush Republicans is all that's needed for now.
