The inevitable has happened: Disconnect is back on Ghost after trying Substack again. I didn’t just ditch another US tech platform; I learned the Substack network isn’t as helpful as it used to be, and certainly doesn’t justify putting up with the platform’s support for Nazis.

Funny to see New Zealand’s prime minister try to take credit for a plan announced four years ago then delayed by Amazon. I find it hard to believe Amazon’s figures, but even more than that it’s wild to see the fanfare over greater dependence on US cloud firms in light of Trump and the CLOUD Act.

If you repealed the Online News Act today, news publishers would not get the same benefit from Facebook as they had before because the nature of the platform has changed. Meanwhile Google and other platforms are actively directing users to chatbots; discouraging clicking through to websites.

Critics say Canada’s Online News Act was terrible for media because they lost Facebook traffic. Seeing how things have developed, I’d say it gave Canadian media a head start on where tech platforms are going (particularly since genAI). The question is whether publishers used that time effectively.
