The gleeful doxing of someone cheating in public is bad even if they are a CEO and even if they are a Coldplay fan. It's bad because this kind of thing is happening to random people on TikTok for such crimes as "sitting silently on a plane" or "being attractive" www.404media.co/the-astronom...

This is like deep buzzkill / privacy lecture behavior of me, but using face rec / crowdsourcing doxing investigations on totally random people doing absolutely nothing has become extremely popular and normalized on TikTok and it's really very bad

sonkima @sonkima.bsky.social

I think the bigger picture is how this is normalized to the micro sense as well. Imagine a TikTok of a high schooler, and that spreads to their high school. A nobody, yet still recognizable. It's this weird social media sense of wanting to show yet be unknown; can't have both now, even w/o consent.

jul 18, 2025, 5:22 am • 1 0 • view
avatar
sonkima @sonkima.bsky.social

I'm all for laughing at infidelity from higher ups because of karma, but one should recognize how scarily quick we all are able to even do this to the smallest person as well ("Hey, TikTok, make this person famous! Do your thing!" etc. Can be for both positive and negative).

jul 18, 2025, 5:25 am • 2 0 • view
avatar
jcrm @jcrmxyz.bsky.social

But that's my point, this isn't an example of that. What you're describing is someone who's not a public figure becoming one despite what they might want. This is someone who is already a recognizable public figure.

jul 18, 2025, 5:32 am • 2 0 • view
avatar
sonkima @sonkima.bsky.social

No, that's what the article is about from a larger scale of sense. Jason is just using the current topic as an example of how quick things can be, again even with the example reduced to just a high school.

Jason! I don’t know if you’ll see this, but recently in the streets of NY I see someone just walking, filming everything, at least once a week. Like, camera just on a stick and they’re filming. If I worked in a touristy area, I might understand it. But… it feels more like the Google cars for Maps.

Not THE ACTION KID, surely! There are people who take walks around ordinary neighborhoods and film them on You Tube; they're very popular. Action Kid is one. Joolz Guides from UK is big, too. There's a guy in Tehran who does wonderful videos--you feel like you're back there.

No nothing like that. They all have the same set-up, walking and not talking, just straight filming. Maybe they are filming for influencers? I saw two in the same walk home a week ago and I don’t live in a particularly photogenic or at all famous neighborhood, so it stood out.

It's the treatment of other people's lives as an abstract source of entertainment. Like they're watching a TV show with fictional characters rather than actual real people. It's the virality that's problematic, not that they were filmed.

There are over 80,000 companies in the USA with roughly the same number of employees or more (according to NAICS). I don't think being a CEO makes you some kind of public person. It also doesn't make you someone who makes good decisions.

having around the same number of employees is very much the wrong metric when the company in question is a unicorn, ie over $1 billion. a company could have the same number of employees and make a miniscule fraction of what their revenue is.

by going to a highly-public and highly visible place (especially standing on a balcony in a crowd) that is known to have jumbotrons with your side piece and then further engaging in a PDA with said sidepiece, you're accepting the risk of being seen, even if not on a jumbotron. a gamble regardless!

Regulating facial recognition software that makes it significantly easier to identify strangers is a good start. It makes it more challenging to target specific individuals. I think the handheld recording device in every pocket genie isn’t going back in the lamp.

Ultimately, what everyone is concerned about requires a big shift in the public zeitgeist. As in, it will require a shift in what is "acceptable" use of cameras and social media, not laws and vague recriminations.
