If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

* It's run by people who do evil things, and sure, 'no ethical purchases under capitalism', but nobody *has* to use chatgpt (yet 🙄). * It's exploitative (theft of IP and lots of low paid foreign workers). * It's very resource heavy (electricity and water). * It's an enormous privacy risk.

I don't think that's at all unreasonable. It's mentally checking out. Relegating even basic communication, much less intellectual treatise or innately intimate things like eulogies to the equivalent of a cheap greeting card. Not even on with a personalized note written in it.

Counterpoint: it's perfect for obituaries. Using ChatGPT to write an obituary is the best use case I've found. It's a task no one wants to do, at a time they least want to do it, which follows a very specific formula, for which there's literally millions of training examples.

That's not what it's doing. A person still has to provide details. It's the 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘢 for an obituary that it knows well. When someone dies, their loved ones are wracked with grief, likely losing sleep, with a long list of things to do immediately.

Because you're not feeding a loved one's details into the I Don't Care plagiarism slop machine? I thought that part was obvious. Especially with "literally millions of training examples" out there. Assuming it gets it right first try, otherwise you're wasting more time re-prompting and fixing.

They are nowhere near that bad, especially with the amount of training there is. Most obits are stale. Ones that aren't often go viral because it's rare to see. I don't think using a Mad Libs template for an obituary that was plagiarized from actual obits is "better" or morally superior.

Yes I would think less of you if you had a personal assistant write a eulogy or other personal correspondence for you. An LLM will only ever rewrite text that someone else has in fact written. Useful for summaries, digests, collating knowledge and things like research, minutes and instructions. No use for opinion, emotional, disputed or subjective stuff, or if it's learning from bollocks in the first place.

no, because a calculator returns an answer to the question while an llm returns statistical noise resembling a potential answer

if you didn't use chatgpt so much you might be better-positioned to understand why this is such a dumb comparison.

Yeah, because it's stupid. If I ask a calculator what the square root of 144 is, it will give me the same answer every time, no matter how many times I ask it. Gen AI is nowhere near as reliable or consistent.

Yes. These things are hard. And that is actually the point. You struggle and stress, and you do the best thing that you can. And that's what people remember. Your struggle is the thing that create the value. Getting an AI to "help" defeats the purpose entirely. It makes it worthless.

There is an entire generation that don’t have the ability to write more than a couple of sentences for themselves. Apparently it is common in university for students to use ChatGTP to write their essays, apparently not realizing that it’s the learning of how to do it that is the important part.

People who do this stuff need to sit alone in an empty room for a while. They want to ask their memory a question but their heads are full of yelling so this phone ai garbage is a band-aid fix out of ignorance of the actual problem. Force them to think. If you know them force them off of the phone

It’s just so insanely selfish and lazy. These people are such entitled, whiny little deadbeats. Unwilling to put any effort into their goals; they just want a program to do it for them (poorly). And then have the AUDACITY of wanting to be seen as “creatives” when they are actually “thieves.”
