They waited *more than an hour* to enter the Hortman home after watching Mark Hortman get shot in the doorway Unbelievably tragic & heartbreaking And, of course, they publicly congratulated themselves on a great, lifesaving police response when they’d let a lawmaker bleed out. Uvalde is everywhere

The other dynamic at play here is that this is a local story for me & is being experienced in a really particular way by locals. I agree that the story has national implications & I don’t begrudge people elsewhere wanting to talk about it, but I’m not necessarily trying to talk to them about it

But so when people who assume that the murdered lawmaker was male (which you’d assume from my post if you didn’t actually know the story) or whatever are presumptuous about not having our local story handed to them on a platter, that rankles. I did post for conversation—but maybe not with you!

Hard not to disagree with the ACAB sentiment after reading this, especially knowing most cops hate most Democrats:

From the July 26, 2025 Minnesota Star Tribune article on the law enforcement response to the Hortman and Hoffman shootings by right-wing assassin Vance Boelter: A Minnesota Star Tribune investigation has found new details about the law enforcement response to the shootings, including: * The initial 911 call, made at 2:05 a.m. by the Hoffmans' daughter, Hope, included the fact that the suspect was disguised as a police officer and wearing a mask. *In a deviation from department policy, Brooklyn Park police waited more than an hour to enter the home of Melissa Hortman after watching Mark Hortman get shot in the doorway. * New Hope police didn't immediately communicate an officer's interaction with Boelter, which occurred after the Hoffmans were shot but before the Hortmans were killed. * Some police officers and legislators weren't made fully aware of the threat for several hours.

To the layperson, there is no such thing as a safe house on fire. Any house on fire is inherently unsafe, but firefighters have equipment and training and go in to rescue people. It seems all too often that police don't feel the same obligation.

The situation is the possible presence of a shooter, not a fire for which they’re trained and equipped to assess before entry.

Police aren't trained and equipped for the presence of a shooter? Police are increasing armed like they're the military. If they can't come into a building with an active shooter, then maybe we should make some changes to their budget.

As someone who ran medical calls for the FD, I merely disagreed with your analogy. Also, no, regular officers are not generally equipped (depending on the jurisdiction) for an active shooter. Helmets, shields, long rifles, etc. It’s one of the reasons they have SWAT teams.

Yeah, I don't think it's a good look for police officers to hang around outside while little kids are dying in a school because they don't have their military gear and are waiting for the SWAT team. But I suppose it's helpful to know there are lots of police officers we can't depend on.

“There wasn’t a playbook for this, and I think that was clear,” said DFL Sen. Erin Maye Quade. There wasn’t a playbook for “mass shooter is on the loose”?! That’s like, one of the most common American violent crimes there is. WTF are these cops doing if not training for that specific scenario?
