I was going through my emails the other day and discovered I still had emails I sent out just before my daughter was born, which is over 18 years ago at this point. But I didn't save the email for my FADE IN purchase, so I just bought it again (it was worth it).

The only Kevin I ever got advice from told me to go to Arizona State. Had he had any other name, I'd have gone there.

St. Tammany Parish SO wrongly arrested this guy and sat him in jail for two weeks while his sister went and got exculpatory video evidence. And even after the DA refused the charges, the Sheriff can't be bothered to update or remove this press release touting the wrongful arrest.

I mean, my Dad did teach me many such tips (not mortgage fraud specifically, but a lot of tax fraud) in the years before he became a convicted felon for bankruptcy fraud.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
The Attorney General of Texas did similar, but nobody cares (mostly because "Ken Paxton committed a crime" happens so often that it's lost all meaning).

The permissions must be signed by parents every year.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
The same law requires parent permission before teaching that, say, George Washington had a wife or refer to the race of Frederick Douglass.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social)
New Texas laws are really stupid. For example, it is now against the law for a school nurse to give a kindergartener a Band-Aid unless the parent has given prior written permission for the nurse to do so.

Why not Salt Lake City or Lubbock (Texas) or Amarillo (Texas) then, if we want him to illegally send troops to cities with higher violent crime rates than Chicago?
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
By the by, the city where I grew up (Amarillo, Texas) has a significantly higher violent crime rate than Chicago (and than even Dallas, Texas), but since Trump won the area with 70%-80% of the vote, they never get mentioned in conversations about crime.

The dealership in question is Southwest Kia of Dallas, owned by Lithia Motors, but they're almost all like that. Lithia owns 298 dealerships in the US and Canada and is based out of Oregon, so it's not even your local car dealership jackass getting rich off bilking Texas consumers.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess millionaire/billionaire car dealerships give a lot of donations to the Republican Party which means they can break the law at will while the rest of us get taken advantage of.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
Our Attorney General, Ken 'Dipshit' Paxton, who regularly sues companies for borderline-at-best deceptive practices when it touches on culture war bullshit issues does absolutely nothing to these giant corps who clearly violate the letter and the spirit of the law.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
Drive down to the dealership and suddenly there's an additional $3,000 in junk 'warranties' and floor mats that are tacked on the price. They disclose it once you get to the dealership, but Texas Admin Code says it has to be shown in advertisements.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social)
Why do we have consumer protection laws if they're allowed to be flaunted without repercussions by businesses? Like car dealers. Advertise a car for $21,998 plus TT&L with no disclosure of any caveats, and Texas law says the dealer has to sell the car to any customer for that price.

But they should also care when school districts go out of their way to purge dozens of special education students even if there is a payment involved.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
Our district just pays off the kids who file a complaint to leave - at a much lower amount than the actual cost to replicate the services the district is otherwise obligated to provide. But yes, if true, they should nip this extra charge thing in the bud.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha ha. Our local school district proudly refuses to properly serve disabled kids. The ACLU has repeatedly been made aware but the most response any of us has gotten is a list of lawyers we could possibly hire individually.

A similar Muslim-focused community has been proposed in Texas, and Ken Paxton and Greg Abbott were all over it trying to get it shut down before it even started. I kinda suspect Paxton and Abbott wouldn't have the same objections to this kind of community.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
Plus, I sincerely doubt that Republicans would have reacted to Bork being confirmed by suddenly nominating more liberal judges (confirming Scalia - though Dems were in the Senate minority at the time of Scalia's nomination - didn't result in Reagan not nominating Bork, for example).
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, Reagan ultimately picked someone for that seat who got confirmed (Anthony Kennedy) who turned out moderately well for liberals compared to what Bork would've been. It's not like 2016 when the Senate just outright blocked nomination.

This story is maddening and yet another example of how 'tough on crime' police don't give a shit about punishing those who railroad innocent people into convictions (and, in this case, protected a guy who repeatedly sexually assaulted a child).

This is so indicative of how business runs in the US these days. It’s never about creating a product or service that people need or want, it’s about buying existing businesses and monopolizing them so as to charge higher prices to a captive audience.

The NHL's Dallas Stars bought up all the ice rinks in the Dallas metro area, in several cases got taxpayer money to build the rinks, and now control ice time for youth hockey, jacking up club fees and forcing leagues to play by their rules. Wild story.

I'm not expressing an opinion on casino gambling, but if you hold public office and have an opinion on casino gambling, it should probably not be so easily influenced by a right-wing billionaire giving you a lot of money, especially when that billionaire traded Luka to the Lakers.
Ryan Paige (@ryanpaige.bsky.social) reply parent
One could easily argue that listening to billionaires is what has caused the US a lot of pain and suffering. It's like how Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was against casino gambling in Texas until Miriam Adelson donated a lot of money to his campaign and now he loves casino gambling.
