I like it here but it can be incredibly earnest, sometimes pretentious and often humourless. Hopefully it will grow and more of people’s interests & popular culture will show up here. Music, football, live commenting on TV etc.

She’s on the long road to become a nurse. She’s more than capable despite the one size secondary education system in this country. It took an Air Vice Marshal in the RAF (don’t ask) to convince her that she wasn’t ‘broken’ and she proved that completely over the past few weeks. Proud Dad over here

What a morning. 16yr old daughter who hasn’t attended school FT since Yr8, gets pushed from pillar to post in the UK edu system. Manages to sit 1 exam in Eng Lang and gets a 6(B) with a week of revision. 1st day at college today, this will suit her more, seems to be going alright. Phew.

Simply outstanding. Heading to Telford and end up in Oxford. Did no one at some point say to the driver “you’ve missed the exit mate.” Or during the following 110 miles say “this ain’t right is it?”

Can’t help but feel that the premier league is going to disappear up its own arse within the next five years. You can’t have 14 clubs all feeling a sense of injustice for one reason or another and maintain a healthy league. I’ll be there with a deck chair and some sandwiches to watch it go.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social)
Right, that’s Facebook gone. Can’t stand another picture of flags, and people shouting because “the left” are offended. How would they know when they live on Facebook. The final straw was a ‘friend’ posting about irrefutable evidence that the earth is flat. That and something-something vaccines.

I never meet people like this wanker, or Badenoch, or Jenrick in real life, just deeply odd and inauthentic people. I do meet Starmers, Raynors & Coopers though. Sadly I also meet a lot of Lee Anderson’s. Basically the Tories aren’t appealing to anybody.

This is horrific, it’s a product of a horrific president and regime. All of America should (not just Trump voters) should reflect on how they created a society that elects a man like Trump to its presidency and made this possible. If the UK isn’t careful, we will go the same way under Farage.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social)
Local midlands BBC and newspapers are basically engagements farms now. Poking people for clicks. It’s when you get into the comments that it gets depressing. W/class people using “lefty” as an insult with no idea what it means. Cant wait for England to get back to work and school next week.

I will fully invest myself in the World Cup but only for the games in Canada and Mexico. I’m always interested in the venues, cities etc. The US based games will be unavoidable but for those the TV will go on at kick off and off at full time. Ideally 🏴 will have games in 🇨🇦 but it’s unlikely.

I suspect that most Salopians would agree with statement one. I know that statement two is the exact purpose for the organisers and funders of this current trend. There’s some along Mt Pleasant Road in Shrew, no harm done but they’ll need to come down soon so we’ll see what happens then.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d be tempted to leave it. Or just your thoughts. Flag waving to celebrate an inclusive modern Britain, national events etc. Fine. I think it’s daft personally. Flag waving to use as bait or exclude others and make people feel threatened and unwelcome. Not fine.

One of two very good threads by Adam on this. A startling number of people - responding, in part, by the tone set by their government - just have this very complacent 'oh, no, this plan will never work'. I mean, 1) it could but also 2) they will definitely try.

I’m sorry but it is worth comment and should be pushed back on in the strongest terms. If the PM can’t or won’t reclaim the narrative he may as well step aside. His inability to simply tell a positive story is going to lead the country into the arms of Farage.

We’ve overachieved and are probably well ahead of schedule, but the accounting side can’t catch up in time. The danger is we fall back into the pack whilst another club has a go. It feels like the rules will change and whichever challenger club is holding the parcel when they do will win. #AVFC

Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social)
Start of the season all fans feel optimistic, it could be our year, give it a go etc. But Villa have given it a go, exceeded expectations and want to build on success, but we can’t. The rules won’t allow us to do what needs to be done. So what’s the point? Investing £ms to stand still. #AVFC

Yes, and as I wrote that essay in reply I thought maybe the Star was never decent at all. I’m fairly confident that the demographic of the county is not as right wing / down right nasty as the Shropshire Star is now. But, you’d know far more about local media than me.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social) reply parent
Certainly the organisers of this movement and the grifters with a loud national voice. It’s the pushback that creates the fuel. Councils removing flags from lamp posts because it’s unsafe or maintenance fuels the English victimisation narrative, as you say. That’s why it’s so hard to combat it.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social) reply parent
I could on for ages about my views of the Shropshire / Express and Star. I’ve had a lot of thoughts on it over the years, especially about very serious Telford stories not covered at all, some of those stories occurred across the road from their HQ! Anyway I’ll get off my soap box.
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social) reply parent
I always thought the Star leaned right, but not out of any ingrained principle, maybe that’s the demographic of the county. It was decent though for a local newspaper. They seem to be about engagement and clicks now and far less about local journalism (ha ha).
Mark (@shropbboy.bsky.social) reply parent
They do seem to have leaned into the asylum seeker hotels, and the flags stories very strongly, even if it has nothing to do with Shropshire in most cases. Their Facebook page is a cesspit of bigotry and ignorance, and the Star seems to know exactly what they’re doing.
