I like it here but it can be incredibly earnest, sometimes pretentious and often humourless. Hopefully it will grow and more of people’s interests & popular culture will show up here. Music, football, live commenting on TV etc.

What a morning. 16yr old daughter who hasn’t attended school FT since Yr8, gets pushed from pillar to post in the UK edu system. Manages to sit 1 exam in Eng Lang and gets a 6(B) with a week of revision. 1st day at college today, this will suit her more, seems to be going alright. Phew.

I will fully invest myself in the World Cup but only for the games in Canada and Mexico. I’m always interested in the venues, cities etc. The US based games will be unavoidable but for those the TV will go on at kick off and off at full time. Ideally 🏴 will have games in 🇨🇦 but it’s unlikely.

Yes, and as I wrote that essay in reply I thought maybe the Star was never decent at all. I’m fairly confident that the demographic of the county is not as right wing / down right nasty as the Shropshire Star is now. But, you’d know far more about local media than me.
Certainly the organisers of this movement and the grifters with a loud national voice. It’s the pushback that creates the fuel. Councils removing flags from lamp posts because it’s unsafe or maintenance fuels the English victimisation narrative, as you say. That’s why it’s so hard to combat it.
I could on for ages about my views of the Shropshire / Express and Star. I’ve had a lot of thoughts on it over the years, especially about very serious Telford stories not covered at all, some of those stories occurred across the road from their HQ! Anyway I’ll get off my soap box.
I always thought the Star leaned right, but not out of any ingrained principle, maybe that’s the demographic of the county. It was decent though for a local newspaper. They seem to be about engagement and clicks now and far less about local journalism (ha ha).
They do seem to have leaned into the asylum seeker hotels, and the flags stories very strongly, even if it has nothing to do with Shropshire in most cases. Their Facebook page is a cesspit of bigotry and ignorance, and the Star seems to know exactly what they’re doing.
