There are plenty of different ways to do elections. The important thing is that power be legitimately at risk in them.

Dangit I was hoping for nonfiction. I do not read novels, I know how that statement comes across but I just can't bring myself to care about fiction, I barely watch movies at this point.

Even if it were, the dictator is not immortal and will have to be replaced eventually. Without democracy, that job tends to go to the most ruthless psycho in the general vicinity. You can either be ruled by imbeciles or ruled by gangsters. I'll take the democracy please.
Ben Feddersen (@snoozebuttonben.bsky.social) reply parent
Like, we're taught from a young age that democracy is good but at no point is it ever actually explained.

There seems to be a pattern emerging, and quite a useful one: force Putin to choose between protecting his oil refineries or protecting his security service. The flamingo strike on FSB locations in Crimea was not about the hovercraft, it was about sending a message.
Ben Feddersen (@snoozebuttonben.bsky.social) reply parent
Also, racism is a part of a lot of cultures, so if you're highly multicultural, you're gonna be getting a lot of different forms of racism. The trick is getting them all pointed in different directions so they mostly cancel out.

Ben Feddersen (@snoozebuttonben.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. You blew the proper presentation of the trolley problem. The twist is not to change the one person to kill, the twist is to change your mode of interaction with the system. People will throw a switch but they won't shove a person. Ergo, utilitarianism is untrue.

Unlike Japan and Korea there has never been a concerted industrial effort to make German cultural exports competitive so they largely aren't (trust me on this one). Compare to the Swedes: you can't make a living selling detective novels to 10 million people, so you HAVE to compete globally.
