In Southern California. Reply more than I post. 1/2 serious posts. 1/2 jokes. On the left, but probably either more left or not as left as you want. Utopia is for everyone's needs to be met sustainably. Pic is unfairly maligned California delta smelt.

where are the complaints of media bias now that it's not (and maybe never was in our lifetimes) liberal bias? Because this is clearly bias, this is not even pretending to be neutral.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
one can even be sympathetic, if they want, to why BLUE cities and states made that decision, they took one look at their budget in freefall and made economic choices. Businesses generate profits AND TAXES. States can't print $. They tried to keep hospitals from overwhelm, but ultimately failed.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
So the response to covid just made me more leftist I guess, enforced priors. The reason why bars were open & schools not, or shops open & beaches not, is because one generates money & taxes and the other doesn't. Like I don't know why these people can't see the bleeding obvious. Follow the $

Probably more of these landlords got the money they got to buy rental properties through breaking the law than we suspect (they profited off crime, poured it into rental property)

for a hypothetical too. Not even have you cut all contact with one or more family members due to politics? Reduced contact? etc.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think a company looking strictly at the bottom line would necessarily do that. Because Trump has ordered the shut down of wind plants already under construction. I think such a company would conclude wind may be a risky gamble in the U.S., where Trump could just halt the project.

the entire world solved scarcity in like the 70s, but it's just poorly distributed.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
degrowth may take issue with the very term abundance, how about sufficiency instead? But it's pure strawmanning to say that's most of the critique. Most of the critique is afraid neoliberal deregulation of all sorts, regardless of consequences, is going to get smuggled under the word abundance.

Saw a complaint that people are only reading headlines. Not ideal, but almost noone has time for a deep dive for every form of chaos going on in this country every single day.

I do tend to check what other countries are recommending, granted U.S. is exceptional in many ways (bad ways). I still don't know why they are pushing hepitatis vaccines here so hard.

the impression I get from Russian ex-pats is: you discuss world affairs (this was in the U.S., not Russia) but you don't put hopes in it. Pragmatic pessimism. Not to criticize, I like Russian ex-pats better than Americans who tend to BELIEVE in the system even though it's been broken for years

yes it is wrong to care at all what the President of the United States does when unfortunately you live in the fuckin U.S.. The idiocy that is the U.S. also affects the rest of the world to a degree, but it really affects those in the U.S.

misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
yes that we could get vaccines in other countries always seemed largely delusional. First off many other countries ALSO don't make them available even to their own citizens unless they are seniors, and much less so to foreigners. But if anyone knows anywhere ...

I don't know how to keep the 2 party system and eliminate the Republican party. Vote them out for awhile, yes sure, if elections are fair. And we should. But the party needs to be dissolved. I know some took the tack that the Republican party could be turned back from fascism. How did that work?
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
the u.s. does bailouts all the time, it just doesn't take stake in the companies. Airlines have been bailed out again and again. Car companies have been bailed out. In the great financial crisis the bailouts were massive.

It might care more about a few things like preventive medicine, but you are wishcasting. The U.S. government doesn't care about some things like climate for other reasons. Countries that are big fossil fuel producers don't have a good record there, single payer healthcare or not.

it's almost like the lack of accessing limits, and actual useful applications of technologies and products, from pointless ones that are a net negative for the world, and instead going full steam ahead on everything, is kind of what got us here in the first place.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
and with it it is also out of reach. Like basically need to stop emissions is what I'm saying, when the without first part of the sentence is irrelevant to the truth of the statement.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
market incentives, as flawed as they may be, can not work when the market gets destroyed with every change of admin. The political risks become too much for profit maximizing corps to take. We need to go full new deal. They destroy all possibility of markets, only to counter is government building
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
Ugh if we get back in power and have to rebuilt these things it's going to have to be with federal money or directly by the federal government. I have no problem with private industry or the fed gov doing this. But the profit motive isn't going to work with this level of U.S. political instability
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
his whole candidacy was also backed by fossil fuel money (among other unsavory backers). He promised them whatever they want.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
he's also very much backed by fossil fuel money, so it's both that Trump is insane, and this is pay to play.
misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think it's a GOOD coping technique, but I can't help it. I have just come to terms with Trump admin will destroy EVERYTHING THEY CAN destroy And 40% of people will approve. They LONG FOR THE SWEET RELEASE OF DEATH. Or they are too dumb to know ANYTHING going on. I don't know which is worse

misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
oh it was sarcasm we should continue, as it clearly didn't work, but again the dismantling is really just the Trump regime's lawlessness. IRA wasn't sufficient anyway, but so much has been pushed at one point, carbon taxes, IRA, I'd say maybe not GND but that was meant for recession not inflation

misanthropocene (@stopburningthings.bsky.social) reply parent
we should continue with approaches like the IRA which was unconstitutionally gutted by Trump. They could not have misread the Trump admin more. Although it's not that the approaches were bad exactly, it's that there is no approach that works against a fossil fuel backed dictator trashing the laws
