Republican Sen. Bonham railed against his Democratic colleagues for apparently refusing to compromise. Then he voted against the transportation funding bill, which was deliberately crafted by Democrats as a massive compromise and fails to include programs that are very important to many Oregonians.
The amendment to sunset the payroll tax increase passed with significant bipartisan support. I believe Sen. Khanh Pham was the only person on the committee to vote no. It’s unclear if its inclusion will actually result in Republican support for the overall bill.
An amendment to sunset the funding bill’s .1% transit payroll tax increase in 2028 seems likely to pass. If it does, transit agencies will benefit from a .2% payroll tax for exactly two years, and lawmakers will be right back where they are now in 2027–staring down a fiscal cliff for public transit.
On the other hand, those who ask for small investments in transit or bike/ped infrastructure—which many people rely on—are often portrayed as extremists, even as the climate crisis escalates and more people are killed on our streets. I am not the first to say this (duh) but it bears repeating.
It’s notable how extreme the Republicans’ proposals are here. And it’s worth pointing out, because they’ve been able to move the Overton window significantly, creating an environment where slashing public transit (among other programs) is not considered radical.
Taken to its logical conclusion, Drazan’s suggestion would lead to the elimination of transit statewide in favor of private rideshare. Other considerations: 1) OHP is facing massive cuts and may not offer this service going forward and 2) people rely on transit to go places other than the doctor.
