Tbf, I learned the "use kosher salt for scouring your decades-old cast iron pan your parents gave you when you moved out on your own" technique via the Internet and it took years before I winced at the "waste" of salt. But it WORKS. (These days I do reuse the salt a couple times for scouring.)
