Some cities legally allow cyclists to go on the LPI as well. I figured these bike lights were put in to allow that since it technically not allowed in our MVA, not to give us a weird short window to cross.

World Car Free Day is coming up in 3 weeks on Sunday, September 21st. Last year I bugged @hfxgov.bsky.social (on twitter) about doing something to promote it. Iām going to email them a reminder, but first any Halisky folks have any good ideas of what theyād like to see that day?

The province has been slowly unloading responsibility for some roads in the burbs to the city, which likely makes the cityās budgeting more difficult. www.halifax.ca/transportati...

Private roads are rare, but some exurbs are on provincial roads, so the costs obviously still exist, but arenāt being funded by property taxes.

Do these base the pink vs green on the actual road the property is on or just a broader calculation? Does it take into account private roads or provincial roads?

Drivers have more responsibility to keep others safe because of the disproportionate amount of harm they can do. Pedestrians and cyclists both cannot do that kind of harm, if they do something dangerous they only endanger themselves, unlike drivers.
Terri (@terriclarke.bsky.social) reply parent
No, I am just aware of the setup of that bike lane that sees hundreds of cyclists a day and has car parking on one side of it, and can imagine based on your post history that it that person yelled at you, it was more likely that you gave them a good fright and good reason to do so.
Terri (@terriclarke.bsky.social) reply parent
Great link! Also if itās scary to have a person on a 30lb bicycle come close to colliding with you just imagine if they were operating over 100 times that weight in steel, in a vehicle capable of travelling at speeds over 100km/h faster š¬

Terri (@terriclarke.bsky.social) reply parent

Itās just the second part thatās lacking. No way to go around unless one is comfortable biking in the road. Whenever thereās an event at the Halifax Commons it leaves all the bike infrastructure disconnected since itās sort of a hub in the centre of the peninsula.

Yes, exactly. Dogs and toddlers absolutely should get to enjoy public spaces! I just want a bike network that connects us to the commons but doesnāt necessarily force us to go through the commons every time.
Terri (@terriclarke.bsky.social) reply parent
At least on many other MUPs people are generally moving too & they understand bikes are allowed to be there. Park spaces where people gather and not necessarily just walk or run can be trickier in my experience, especially once you throw in dogs and toddlers.
Terri (@terriclarke.bsky.social)
And hereās a good example of why our bike networks shouldnāt rely so heavily on pedestrian-filled park spaces like the Hfx/Dartmouth Commons:
