They should be the mythological opposite to the Chosen One -- the person who turns destiny not through power or prestige, but through strength of character and willingness to act for the benefit of the whole.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
If you wanted to give mystical weight to a concept like the Web of Life and Destiny, the defining thing about the spider-folks should be their ordinaryness -- the fact that each is an Everyman given the chance to do the right thing in the right moment.

It's a good spy movie that's also a great action movie. Paranoia feels earned, threats feel real, and Bucky just has such a great look.

We have a pretty active native community here in Chicago.

His point is that all of this comes from the same place. Tribalism will kill us. That said, what's happening now is an abomination and is morally reprehensible.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Can you answer the question?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Found the bootlicker
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
That sounds awesome! I'll give it a look!
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Disagree. X-Men stories are type built like noir stories, where Scott needs to get his shit pushed in a lot before he pulls a W.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I've seen some places use a privilege system too, though I don't personally like that -- I think libraries are best when everything is accessible. But hey, some folks swear by it
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep. Snacks, prizes, even business sponsored rewards are great for this. Go to the local pizza place, see if they'll offer a free slice for teens who finish 2 books a month (or whatever goal works best) -- though if your library is a govt agency clear with legal, and always run by your boss!
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Which shows character on his part, but it doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't have gotten it. I think Obama was a good president, but I had issues with his drone policy, and I am not going to argue that he did more to advance peace than any other person in his position
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
He shouldn't have gotten it either, tbh. But yes, it aboslutely destroyed minds on the right
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Human history of full of groups that have done this kind of vile shit, and none of the folks they victimized in this way had magic.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing that galls me about it is just how these folks think they're being super clever. Like, no shit, when you maim a person it makes it harder for them to do stuff. If you live in a society where that's the go to, why do you think the powers that be would hesitate to use it on normies?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Atypical, in my experience, but I'm in a CoS group right now and that is my character's motivation, so I can't fault you there
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I've played for 25 years, but I've been blessedly free of murderhobory for the majority of that time. It's always surprising to me when folks leap to torture -- most of my groups would try any solution before this kind of thing.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
The rules are not so specific that they require anything more than binding and a gagging a spell caster to prevent them from doing their thing.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social)
So a DnD group I am a part of is discussing maiming player spellcasters as a way of limiting their danger when captured. It's being treated as some kind of brilliant solution, but I kind of think that most people are probably incapacitated when you lop off an arm? Also a fairly evil act when...
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
David Dastmalchian alone guarantees it's gonna be weird. I'm super down for it.

There will always be someone willing to sell out. This is a clear reminder of that
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah... I mean, to me the biggest takeaway is that unless it's a hell yes it's a hell no. I do think he was a bit of a victim of everything else going around at that time, there's plenty of bad news around ex in Hollywood, but this sounded like something that didn't really need coverage
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent

thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think it's that kind of anime...
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep, and that relationship really anchors the movie.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, just treated him as a name to be used and discarded. Disappointing.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
It's Vibranium, right? I thought there's a little chyron that shows that the element can be found in the antarctic and Africa?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
It was reportedly rushed, if I recall. I just don't understand what the priorities were, because that should have been the most fight intensive of the Netflix series, and it just wasn't. I did like where they eventually went with Coleen, but it wasn't very elegantly framed in the series. Just a mess
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I think Finn Jones did an ok job being a very dorky Danny (which Danny has definitely been), but this show really suffered from being Arrow, but worse. Jones didn't have the same physicality as Amell, never mind the fact that a modern Iron Fist should probably have an Asian protagonist.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a fair place to start. Theres a lot you can say about that movie, but I think there's a lot of charm and fun in it. It's an excellent popcorn flick, and the Elektra/Matt park scene always makes me smile.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
How are you enjoying Stevenson compared to Thomas Jane?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep, it's a problem in so much media. I don't think we've gotten to a point where we can celebrate male paunch

Paprika is a top 5 spice, no question. Rub it in chicken or pork for some color and a bit of sweet. You can add it to anything that's missing something, and chances are paprika is it!
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Not at all a bad idea. I usually do cayenne and a bit of smoked Spanish paprika.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, this moment is for fighting. When someone cinches the nom it's time to close ranks, and anyone who sinks that effort is a spoiler. But until that point let's fight, get in the muck, let's get to the absolute best candidate. Be skeptical now, voice your doubts, push them to adopt good policy.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, though religion itself is a nebulous thing. You can make a thousand arguments about a commandment and its meaning. What is certain, as you point out, is the way religion was invoked, the rhetorical justification for slavery.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
However, and I can't say this enough, anything based on the idea that one human is less valuable than another is, at its core, evil.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Slavery has been with us since the neolithic period. It is shameful and evil in any form it takes. It's known that the technology and rhetoric of the era allowed the United States to practice an even more evil, more barbaric form of slavery than many other cultures had up to that point.

The second, accidental, utility of American Christianity is as a system of rules that out groups can aspire to in order to gain the approval from in groups. Literal virtue signalling, in the hopes of gaining scraps from the table.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Christianity is only useful to Americans as a way to define out groups. Otherwise it is made up, in the same way whiteness is made up. As we turn against each other and more outgroups need to be identified, the definition Christianity will narrow just as the definition of whiteness will narrow.

Whoever comes in to do Bruce should have a bit where their only contribution to the server is Batman creeping on other people's scenes. (The camera pans up. Crouched atop Titans tower, we see Batman observing the scene, the wind flourishes his cape dramatically. He glares balefully and leaps away)

Couldn't exist without the normal weave. No tubes, no space between the tubes. So when the weave came back the shadow weave also emerged.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
The shadow weave is weird. to quote a wise man, think of the weave as a series of tubes that carry power. Shar figured out that the empty space between the tubes could also carry power, sneaky power that had its own unique strengths and limitations. What she didn't realize is that the shadow weave
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, they have innate power through a lineage or contact with a supernatural force that granted them the ability to cast spells. I think for them, they'd still have access to power, but they'd have to learn how to channel it again without burning themselves to a crisp.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
So the shadow weave collapsed with the weave, apparently. The spellplague was the justification for the switch to the 4e model of powers, which says to me that some characters did learn how to adapt, regardless of class. But I think others just fell out and couldn't learn to use power in that way
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I think during the spellplague Elminster was almost powerless...
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
I think with time they'd find a way to adapt, but it would probably take decades like it did during the spell plague.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorcerers probably get weird for a while, but their innate powers will find a way to assert themselves -- possibly in ways they can't control. Artificers are temporarily screwed, but will find a way to make due. Some may be entirely unaffected, they are all about creating pathways for power.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Psionicists, Truenamers, and Incarnum Adepts are totally unaffected. Their power comes from internal sources, or from esoteric forces outside of the known universe.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Druids draw power from nature and the elemental planes. They would probably find alternatives very quickly. Wu-Gen are in a similar boat. Warlocks retain most powers as they are manifestations of a patrons will. As long as the power doesn't rely on a god, or a creature that relies on the weave...
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Clerics are obviously donezo with no gods to answer their prayers. Some may retain the ability to cast less powerful spells, but most are powerless. Bards are a tricky subject. I believe in realmspace they are considered arcane casters, but some use the words of creation, which may be distinct
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
So, the weave is basically the delivery system for magic. It's how power flows through realmspace. The vast majority of magic users would be impacted by the scenario described, but for different reasons: Wizards are hit hard, because their power is based on formulae and traditions that have changed

Yeah, I mean... I've said this a million times, but the slam itself was already super stiff. Dude looked half out when he hit the mat. Should never have been allowed in a ring without an understanding of what was gonna happen. If your workers can't trust the folks in the ring with them...

thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. Even that throw would have been enough to get him to medical. He didn't even try to defend himself, dude was out when he hit the mat
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Man look at that slam. Stu was probably half out from how stiff it was. Then the punches? No way anyone can interpret that as even something gone wrong. It was flat out bad intent.

Who is the lil dude in the face paint? Probably saved a life?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Even the takedown itself was super stiff -- dude wasn't expecting to get laid out like that, you can see his head bouncing off the mat. He was probably out as the first blows fell

Even the takedown was super stiff. Dude went in there with a mission.

What is Hakeem Jeffries' plan to pull democrats up from historic levels of unpopularity?
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
If the weave totally collapses, then I think the big winners are the weirdos -- the truenamers, psionicists, incarnum adepts, and warlocks. I think the Wu-Jen and Druids would end up finding different ways to manipulate their powers without the weave.
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
What with the Shadow Weave still kicking
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Would immediately cause global catastrophes not seen since the creation of the Calim Desert, as they squabble over who is going to wish themselves into godhood. The various Chosen would be at war with every upstart archmage with more ambition than sense. Sharites end up the big winners though.

thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
All my Tav's hate Shar because the shadow-cursed lands are hellish and I don't really know how any sane person can get behind everyone getting nuked into ghostliness, and then bound for eternity to the demented bevy of bizarrities that populate the Thorm line. Like, let's be real here
thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent

thenightlibrary (@thenightlibrary.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, the whole setting is predicated on the idea that you're part of the most enduring MLM scheme in history, the bottom rung of a culture hiding from both human society and your awful god-monster grandpa who will drain you like a juice box if you don't participate in his demented schemes
