How much you wanna bet the 380 tons of mulch is being supplied by a GOP connected business and is being purchased at a price massively over market value?

How many pushups and pullups can he do? Doesn't look like very many, could be a problem. He needs to start hitting the roids hard and tanning those balls if he wants to stay on Bobby's good side.

When the Dems are back in charge, every GOP politician who has ever taken out a mortgage can expect an investigation. And I'd bet the rate of "irregularities" of some sort, from any random sampling of mortgage applications, is probably around 20-30%. Might have to go on a prosecutor hiring spree.

Nah, they proposed a study to assess the prudence of a strongly worded letter, and how strong the words should be. The letter itself is weeks away.

A "diversion" from what exactly? Are Dems trying to say Trump is deliberately shifting our gaze *towards* his authoritarian crackdown to hide something more nefarious? What, pray tell, is more nefarious than the ongoing destruction of our Democracy? It makes no sense. Just incoherent messaging.

Excellent point re: the cost of crime reduction being our freedom. Another great example is traffic fatalities. We accept a traffic fatality rate more than 2x the homicide rate. We could bring it to ~0 with a national 25mph speed limit. We don't. We accept that loss of life as the cost of freedom.

"We never target civilians, it's just that the poor accuracy of our weapons leaves a high probability that we will hit civilians" is actually exactly the same as targeting civilians.

The White House Press Corp is now a transcription service and Trump fluffing service, nothing more. No journalists remain. Just insiders there for the travel and the perks, and they will do nothing that threatens that access. They've decided autocracy is not so bad if you are on the inside.

It is sick. "Wife Beater" and "Child Predator" are not even actual crimes, they are pejoratives to describe people guilty of certain crimes. For a cabinet member to use terms like these against a member of the public is just deranged. God help us.

Dems are SO BAD at this. Engage with people. Talk to them. Convince them. Tell a story. "Do you know where DC ranks in violent crime among cities? Not even in the top 20. And most cities ranked higher were in red states. So does it sound like this is about crime? That's an obvious lie." And so on.

I agree with him. It's also the chastising vibe it gives - "How dare you leave out the IA+ folks, you cruel heartless worm!" For many, it just becomes exhausting trying to keep up with the terminology and feeling the disapproval when you fail to. Keep it simple, win more hearts and minds.

Yes, patriarchy is a thing. And Bluesky is a place to discuss it. But this is about words used by politicians in the public sphere. I can't imagine a context where the word "patriarchy" is effective. I prefer "Hegseth promotes a pastor who thinks women shouldn't be allowed to vote. That's crazy!".
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
This *should be* front page news. In the past it would have been, across all media outlets. Now with a few exceptions the media is asleep at the wheel or actively working to undermine Democracy and excuse corruption. It's a national disgrace.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
And poorly done, apparently! The point being how insane it sounds when this lingo is used densely, to support the subtler point that even in isolation many of these terms are off-putting outside of Bluesky-like bubbles. Which is where most of our potential voters are, and we need to speak to them.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
Tom is a privileged cisgender element of the heteronormative patriarchy who's policing of language is a microaggression triggering the unhoused, food insecure, and LGTBQIA+ communities into safe spaces in a manner tantamount to involuntary confinement. At least that's what my 80 yr old aunt says.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a different argument, and one I agree with- "Dem politicians are not saying most of these these words anyway". The OP went too far saying that it is "totalitarian" to merely *suggest* that Dems are careful about language, and people who don't know these terms are "apes". Big tent, please!
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry, but a 70 year old Democratic midwestern voter who doesn't know what "cisgender" means is not an "ape". And c'mon, there was no "demand", merely a suggestion for Dem politicians to speak plainly in a way that most Americans understand. Good advice for some of the words on the list, not others.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
It's the words that sound weird to a large slice of America. Not the concepts, the words, the jargon of academia. My late dad was diehard liberal, but hated language like this. It's a turnoff to those not immersed in the lingo. Unnecessarily alienating. Speak plainly, he'd say. I say good advice.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
This. Simple language gets the messages across. It sounds pretentious and out of touch to some voters when they hear terms like "food insecurity" to describe what they've known as "hunger" or "poverty". Speak to your audience. Academic-coined jargon isn't "bad", just not right for all occasions.
SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
Words matter. Picking the right words to describe a policy, matters. Defund the police suggests, by the accepted meaning of defund, eliminating police. Which is obviously stupid to 99% of Americans. Reform police procedures, enhance police training - ok. Defund the police - will lose every time.

"Every nation on earth is fascist for controlling their borders" kinda renders the word "fascist" meaningless. Absurd to use the same term to describe, say, Canada today, a country which controls its borders, and Germany under Hitler or Italy under Mussolini. Words have meaning.

SteveG (@trenchdiggr.bsky.social) reply parent
Today's journalists might muster "Trump claims he has ended 10 wars. Democrats question this". Which merely amplifies the claim that he has ended 10 wars! I imagine Tom Brokaw reporting "the President is making the absurd claim that he has ended 10 wars. This is a lie. He has ended none."
