Schools were a state by state thing. In Cali, we did actually close schools for a long while. Some states barely did crap. And yeah, we never defunded the police. Period. I think it’s probably a crappy slogan but no one actually did it so claiming defunding happened is bs.

I know this kinda goes without saying, but wouldn’t a functional government bother verify a claim like that before taking action? Especially given that Benny Johnson got caught taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Russian government to influence American politics?

It was both. We were doing what we believed was the right move for children and adults at the time. And for the *most part* we did. Keeping schools partially closed an additional year here in Cali was probably a mistake. But a) it still likely saved lives and b) Cali isn’t swinging red!

I spent all day yesterday moving and I sure am glad I missed all this discourse. I don’t know who Jerusalem is, but she appears to be trying to sell people on staying on Twitter, the site operated by a shitty white supremacist who bought the last election.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

i'd like to start a new subculture for people like me who are apartment dwellers and aren't allowed to have a gas or charcoal grill. we'll be like barbecue guys only for microwaves. we'll wear shirts to work that say "i'd rather be microwavin'!" and share microwave steak recipes and stuff

The Brits tried a deal like this and it was shot down as extravagantly expensive and pointlessly cruel. So I guess, we’re in? Deporting non-criminals - mostly working people - to a country they’re likely not from? For millions? It doesn’t make sense. It’s just hatred run wild.

This is in the replies and it demonstrates a real issue which is if you find profundity from an AI, you’re responding to something profound a human being wrote that was vacuumed up and what ends up happening is you thank AI and not only don’t thank the person, you have no idea they were involved

Indeed. Roving, masked, gun-toting paramilitaries with a loose leash generally don’t stop doing their thing just because they can’t find targets. They start expanding the definition of what their targets are.
