The US and China are part of the ITER project so we already cooperate with them in some respects on fusion. Helion is a private company in WA state trying their own design that is very different from ITER.

Fusion plants will be zero emission power sources and they can't 'melt down' like fission reactors can as disruptions to the conditions for sustained fusion would just stop the reaction. Whether we should use that power for AI data centers instead of everyone else is another (valid) question.

All the AI folks are banking on fusion breakthroughs. They recently started construction on the first 'commercial' in WA for Helion fusion with the goal of powering Microsoft data centers. Besides MS, the two biggest backers are Sam Altman and one of Peter Theil's companies, Mithril capital.

Their bread is buttered by fossil fuel money and they never had any intention of moving away from it. We could have phased out a ton of coal and oil plants and replaced them with nuclear reactors in the past 20 years which would have massively cut our emissions in the meantime.

I get that they are bought by the fossil fuel industry, but with AI data centers requiring so much new power generation, it doesn't make sense for them to cut everything off with nothing to replace it. They will need years to get an gas/coal plants up or a decade for a nuclear reactor.
