That you need to work on your reading comprehension and realise this was aimed at him, not you? Though I wouldn't say the primary energy fallacy is particularly obvious to most people.

I guess because to me, part of what could maybe actually be Blueskyism, is seeing an unhinged reply and not being sure of the direction of the broken hinge. Not that I actually like that particular reply.

Except we can obviously convert the electricity into the overwhelming majority of those things, like heating (at hundreds of % efficiency if we use heat pumps), and EVs. Plus because fossil fuels are so inefficient, we actually need much *less* energy overall this way:
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
If only we could convert electricity into other forms of energy, like, imagine if it could also make heat, or light, or move a car? But alas, that's clearly impossible, and the primary energy fallacy? That is definitely not a thing as well..

My increasingly hard-held take as I've gotten older is 100% the opposite. Arbitrarily (key qualifier there) deeming some fun things as bad for you to like when you get older is bad, and I don't really see any utility in doing so, beyond snobbery/being a killjoy. Let people enjoy things.

Labour/Starmer are literally pursuing a strategy that research published years ago covering many different countries, shows *does not* work. "If anything, our results suggest that they lead to more voters defecting to the radical right."
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
Aside from how they actually did vote for them, and how if nobody cared, you wouldn't be insulting them, is it exhausting telling trans women that they're "privileged kid[s]" for not wanting to vote for people opposed to their rights?

Here in the UK we're building a new reactor at Hinkley Point, I've again not seen anything indicating NIMBYs have had any real role in delaying its construction process or increasing its cost, but it's already estimated to be around a third over budget, and years behind schedule.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
Flamanville 3 in France was meant to start production in 2012, and while I can't seem to find anything indicating it had any real delays due to NIMBY lawsuits, especially in famously pro-nuclear France, it was still 12 years later and nearly €10bn over budget.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
That just isn't really true though, they were always very expensive. Why do you think the cost and construction challenges are down to NIMBYs? Similar lawsuits again Vogtle 3 and 4, the US's newest reactors, were dismissed within a few months. They were still 7 years late and $17bn over budget.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social)
If it being disgusting wasn't bad enough, Labour/Starmer embracing far right BS to try to beat the far right is also just so goddamn incompetent. Trying to do so just grants them more legitimacy and voters, shifts the Overton window, and they'll gladly go "thanks!" as you also lose your core voters.
Dmitry Grozoubinski (@explaintrade.com) reposted
Keir Starmer's political strategy of trying to position himself as Farage with better administrative skills would be morally reprehensible even if it were working. It does not appear to be.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
Can you explain how the incredibly high costs of constructing a nuclear power plant, which are mostly down to them being massive, incredibly complex construction projects that have to be built to very tight tolerances for safety reasons, compared to cheaper renewables, were "done on purpose"?
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
I remember the last time that happened here in the UK very vividly, because it happened 29 years ago when I was also a kid. There were thoughts and prayers, and oh yeah, we massively changed our gun laws so it wouldn’t happen again.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent

Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
Have you really not considered the obvious explanation that he’s fine looking like a xenophobic racist, because that’s what he is? It’s pretty consistent with Labour’s policies, and it’s very much consistent with his Enoch Powell 2.0 speech. This is just who he is.

Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent

Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
Meanwhile rebutting that with "Um, actually, while the tech is cool in the abstract, the economics of nuclear are fucking godawful and they're the cost overun-tastic construction projects from hell to try to build" isn't quite as satisfying.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
I could be wrong, but I think nuclear's appeal is partly that from an advanced tech standpoint, there's something really cool about getting power from something so scientific, combined with how knowing they're actually pretty safe and we can manage the waste gives people a contrarianism high.
Wonkish (@wonkish.bsky.social) reply parent
My assumption is that they're likely arguing it a bit from a legal standpoint, but more from a practicality standpoint. You can pass a law prohibiting me from writing/running certain code, but that doesn't mean you actually have any way to enforce it (though I'm sure the UK gov would like to try).
