I love the first image with the AI art surrounded by paint tubes and art supplies. I baked a box cake with artificial raspberry flavoring, I will style it with a flour barrel, brown farm eggs, pats of churned butter, a jar of honey and fresh raspberries. (And my cake is still better than AI)

Good news about the cutting-edge AI tools from the $3-trillion-dollar company.

Google AI search result for “was 2010 fifteen years ago?” returning: “No, 2010 was 14 years ago, not 15 years ago. The current year is 2025, and to find the number of years ago 2010 was, you subtract 2010 from 2025, which equals 14. Current Year: 2025 Past Year: 2010 Years Ago: 2025 - 2010 = 14 years”

We have no idea if it’s effective, but we do know it doesn’t cost as much as the things that are actually effective.

At a time when unprecedented political and financial constraints make it tough to enact proven systemic reforms, district officials are also betting that AI can take some pressure off administrators and teachers facing high burnout and attrition by helping them with tasks such as emailing parents and generating lesson plans. And they hope it can address declining US test scores and student engagement by customizing teaching material for each student’s needs and interests. Evidence is mixed on whether AI can help accomplish either goal, but in the meantime the financial math has been persuasive: Bringing AI into schools might cost a typical district from nothing to several million dollars a year, depending on the district’s size and the products used, compared with a much higher price tag for structural changes such as hiring more teachers.

My statement on @nadler.house.gov’s decision not to seek re-election next year.

“For more than thirty years, when New Yorkers needed a champion, we have turned to Jerry Nadler—and he has delivered for us time and again. Jerry stood alongside gay and trans Americans when it was politically unpopular, voted with courage—not calculus—against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, stood steadfast alongside the first responders and families sickened after 9/11, and led efforts to hold a lawless Trump administration accountable. Few leaders possess his record of principled progressivism, and fewer can claim to have made such an enduring impact on the fabric of our city. Congress will be worse off without his leadership, but our democracy will be better for the selflessness that has defined a legendary career.”

Politics today is less driven by ideological conviction and more by parties chasing votes based on a distorted picture of public opinion, one filtered through algorithms that amplify emotionally engaging content. This incentivises performance over substance and erodes democratic deliberation.

Good decision. I've always found the evidence for the idea that we need chickenpox to circulate to boost immunity to shingles quite weak. (And in reality, what's happened in UK is that people who can afford the vaccine get it anyway.)

the thing that was terrifying to them about FDR wasn't so much the policies themselves (which were, of course, far short of socialism or communism) but that they were incredibly popular and lead to electoral dominance until FDR's death (and even somewhat after)

Also tiled bathrooms to make cleaning and disinfecting them easier. I get twitchy when I see rough stone walls in modern bathrooms.

I still mask in public, but ironically my elderly parents don’t, so they’re the ones who bring ick home. I really wish the pandemic had led to full scale upgrades of indoor air quality and filtering all over the world. It did after the flu pandemic of 1919! We got hot radiators and windows to open.

You’re in spring, right? So still indoors a lot, heating making the indoor air dry, people cramped in together, respiratory infection season. I think covid having summer and winter peaks means we all have to expect respiratory infections will be year round now, but they will always suck.
