I actually couldn't care less about Lucy Connollys sentence, in much the same way I don't care about the sentence given to anyone guilty of a crime. That's what we have a judiciary for. Argue, by all means about if it should be a crime or not, but the sentence is politicians and judges, 'experts'.

When I worked there, DWP would prosecute for £2,000+. HMRC wouldn't get out of bed for <£20,000. Largely because not enough staff. Tax fraud work is much harder to prove* but massively more efficient for the public purse. *claimants rarely have accountants & lawyers!
Stopping benefit fraud is easy, most mistakes are made by DWP. Stopping tax fraud is harder, but much, much more valuable (£millions v £thousands). Tax fraud dwarfs benefit fraud & doesn't target the most vulnerable. Its about time Government got its priorities right.
