Had an argument with a guy yesterday about putting Hoffman in in a tie game while Nance could have gone. Deserves high leverage assignments much more than Hoffman.
I’m glad you ended the discussion. I believe in this team, too. It is not my opinion that Hoffman is not our highest leverage reliever…it is statistical fact. Don’t go by stats, that’s fine. Look where it got us.
Hoffman is not our highest leverage reliever. He’s shown that throughout the season blowing saves and giving up runs in close games. We have Rodriguez, Little, Nance who should be used in those situations. Hoffman works best with a two or more run lead. He’s proven that. “Ifs” mean nothing.

Huh?? Hoffman has been used 37 of 58 times in a save situation. That’s how he should be used. He has zero holds this season, because he isn’t meant to be used to hold the game. There is no reason whatsoever to put him in to hold a tie game. None.
Not in the 8th, which is what I’m talking about. No Dominguez (who escaped because of a great double play). Yariel in the 8th, hope for a run in the bottom, put Hoffman in with the lead. If Toronto doesn’t score in the bottom of the 8th, either keep Yariel in or put someone else in.
48 game finishes and 29 saves says otherwise. It may not have been predictable for you, but the entire row of people watching with me predicted it. 😉
Hoffman isn’t paid to “hold”. He’s paid to close. Personally I think it would have been much more prudent to put Rodriguez in in the 8th, hope for a run in the bottom half and then Hoffman. Then Hoffman pitches to the bottom half of the order rather than the meat.

What is going on at Canada Post? Thanks to the folks at Kingston local for this infographic. TL:DR Canada Post management has spent a lot on infrastructure over the past five years and invested deeply in Purolator. CUPW members wages have not kept up with inflation over the last 5 years.
