Exactly this. Mid-40s faculty here (white/cis tho). I'm looking at the 15yrs from my early 40s (COVID) to my late 50s (recovering from whatever this will be) with sadness. Our uni leaders are preserving what they can today at the expense of tomorrow. The cruelty of that is hard to see.

For those following the NIH budget fight, the next big development will be this Tuesday, Sept 2nd, with the House LHHS subcommittee markups. The bill text will likely come out late Monday. The House bill is likely to be closer to the president's budget request than the Senate's was, so be prepared.

Becoming a Professional Engineer (certified PE) can probably be done in 5 years if you do nothing else, but it strictly requires 4 years supervised work, after completing the FE exam, which you cannot take until you have a BSc.

After Judge Young vacated the terminations of the 900+ grants, NIH staff had to go back into their system and re-activate them. Grants don't terminate or reinstate themselves. Someone has to do the work. So as of today, most of the 900 grants at issue are currently active in NIH's systems. 4/
