Plenty of "woulda coulda shoulda" to go around -- the science community should have insisted on OpenCL or that CUDA itself be made open source. OpenCL devs should have zeroed in on performance and been able to show it beating CUDA in a bench or two. AMD shouldn't have fumbled compute for a decade.
I think it started with CUDA. OpenCL never caught on as well as it needed to and compatibility layers for AMD cards had orders of magnitude worse performance. So, every time anyone wanted to do something fancy on a GPU, they bought NVidia.

There've been quite a few homebrew games for the Amiga trying to bring a Doom-like to the platform and given the limitations of the hardware, those crazy hackers have gotten impressively close.

As recently as a couple years ago, the people I was telling to please use literally any other abbreviation were hearing that it was a slur for the first time from me.
In my experience, it's usually people from outside the US and/or for whom English is a second language. The slur has extremely specific-to-us origins and a lot of online spaces truly didn't mean anything harmful by it when they started using it.

I protest in my own teeny tiny way by not resharing posts that don't have alt text. Occasionally I ask peoples' permission to repost and add it myself, if I think a post is REALLY good. Everyone else has to make do with just a "like", if that.
The "require alt text" toggle could be on by default and there could be a clearly labelled-and-help-texted entry field for it not hidden behind a button but noooooo, then people who choose to upload photos without alt text would be forced to face the realization that their choice is intentional!
