No, Trump signed an executive PURPORTING to rename DoD to Department of War. An executive order is a memo from the President to his underlings; it has no force of law and certainly cannot overturn or invalidate an actual law.

There does not exist enough negative consequence in the Universe for them to understand. Not understanding is their superpower, and that pit is infinitely deep. You will not ever fill it.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think McConnell chickened out. I think he calmly and coolly calculated that Donald Trump out and free and unpunished was useful to the Republican Party.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, this president really can't afford for us to look too closely into child trafficking, can he?

The Greenbrier bunker; the United States Director of Time; an Edsel in prime condition.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
He does not have any legal authority to do this, of course.

Also, "bone-petite"??
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
In that the US government did not then (and should not now) recognize the Confederacy as a legitimate government and thus the rank of general was never conveyed by any legitimate authority. In some ways a fiction but a useful and meaningful one.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Considering how much time Trump spends golfing, eight vacations in seven months IS training for the presidency.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Not to quibble, but what exactly did he appoint her to? The President -- indeed, the federal government -- does not oversee elections.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social)
January 6 was a violent insurrection, not a peaceful protest. Just posting this periodically to make sure we remember.

Can he also read their midi-chlorian levels?

More like, em, 40 years. Even before the decade was over we were doing nostalgia for it.

Maybe Trump should stop doing impeachable things?
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, she now CLAIMS they said that.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Why isn't she suing the Surgeon General?
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Some people need someone else to blame.

Did he somehow miss most of the Cold War? Does he not remember Sarah Palin?

Whatever works for you. I found "And So It Goes..." helped me revisit some Joel music I'd passed on, and it benefits from the revisiting.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep, because the go-to guy on the fairness of elections is the Russian dictator.

"outside the Capitol DURING THE INSURRECTION on Jan 6, 2021". Let's give full context.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social)
I believe Trump when he claims he's trying to tackle violent crime in the Capital. He's just 1678 days late.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
And the Epstein list.

There is that quip in Star Trek VI where one of the Klingons admonish the Federation for speaking about "inalienable human rights". :)
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, they're not veiling it anymore.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, I'm fairly sure they understand it just fine.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
To be fair, he's the Vice President. It's not like he has a real job or anything.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not incompetence. I mean, it is, but also, a hallmark of personality-cult authoritarianism and fascism is to concentrate power in the hands of as few loyalists as you can manage.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if this is actually legal? (a) If the state stops paying them by direct deposit, but keeps paying others by direct deposit, is that allowed? (b) There are also clear separation-of-powers concerns with allowing the executive to monkey with compensation for the legislature.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course they matter. Now he'll be able to claim how he BROUGHT crime down.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
That actually isn't true. You can impeach people out of office, since one penalty is to prevent you from holding office again.

gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent

I agree but I think the wound happened in 2008.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, Eric Adams desperately wants to be accepted in MAGAland, and MAGA is a literal death cult, so that tracks.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm pretty sure there's about to be a lot of snarky hate for We Didn't Start the Fire, but in fact that song is brilliant and deep, as evidenced by all the attempts to ape or parody it that fall so spectacularly short.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
MAGA is a literal death cult. Like, I'm half expecting to see them summon Cthulu or something.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent

My wife laments the loss of the sandlot pick-up game, where kids learned how to NEGOTIATE the rules, without having some hovering authority to set limits. Our drift to authoritarianism owes something to our removal of this autonomy from them when young.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
My very-anecdotal sense as a high school teacher of 29 years is, this is definitely true. Kids don't have free periods. Kids have afterschool activities like sports or yearbook. They don't often just "hang out".
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Remember when we were told we didn't need race-based qualification because what really mattered was socio-economic admission? But now it's also verbotten to ask about income. Hmmm. It's almost as if the people attacking affirmative action were insincere...
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Huh. 2024, you say? Which President should get credit? (We all know which President will CLAIM credit.)

The DEI you mention helps people of color, which the white supremacists see as prima facie anti-white. Let's face it -- the fascists and racists basically can't compete if the field is anything like level.

I need to know something about it. My wife has very serious issues with the uncanny valley and also doesn't like stuff as dark or weird as I do, so I have to know whether I'll be watching it alone. :)

What I love about that first tweet was, Dr. Krugman was very clear in saying that he DIDN'T think the books were being cooked at that time; he was just flagging (correctly so, I believe) that we couldn't be sure, due to earlier Trump shenanigans.

My unpopular opinion: I don't like First Contact on any level. It is a subpar action flick and hardly at all a Trek film, mangles the history, and absolutely ruins the Borg, the only truly alien alien species that Trek had come up with.

"Period" accurate? I see what you did there.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
I think you're right, but consider this: There's no reason for billionaires to struggle and scheme to make in more money when they already have more than they could ever spend -- yet they do. They've "won" capitalism, yet they still fight.
gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
The evil synergy is that ICE imprisonment is BOTH highly wasteful (but satisfies racists) AND lucrative (satisfying grifters). Racists and grifters encapsulates nearly the entire modern GOP. Of course, no reason a particular person can't be both.

gilroy0 (@gilroy0.bsky.social) reply parent
Sadly, it is not. The people really screwing us over -- the oligarchs -- wouldn't be caught dead in an airport lounge. Or on a commercial flight. What do you think private hangars are for?

And read them, too, of course.
