I also feel less safe with a cop as a neighbor, and get anxious when I see cop cars, not relieved. This from an old white man who they would essentially ignore as a threat. I wasn't like this even when I was of a younger, more radical mindset, but this country has made doubt any authority figure. /2
I have noted those who fly US flags cause me different emotions than they used to. As a child, I thought nothing of a home or business flying Old Glory. But since self-proclaimed "patriots" made a habit of it, I think of it as evidence of nationalistic fervor, and avoid those businesses. /1

I have a cop as a neighbor (+wife, kid, one on the way), but I don't feel safer. On the contrary, I feel *less* safe, and since he grew a beard and looks like a large JD Vance, that feeling has worsened.
