These strident posts from the government remind me of one of my many favorite bits of Monty Python—the guy trying to pay the plague dude to take away an old man protesting, “I’m not dead!” “He will be soon, he’s very ill.” “I’m getting better!” “No you’re not, you’ll be stone dead in a moment.”

Boil a pint of tomatillos, half a chopped onion, two or three de-seeded Serrano peppers, and three garlic cloves for twelve minutes. Pop the strained result in a blender with salt, oregano, and pepper, juice from two limes, plus a good handful of chopped cilantro. Vroom! Salsa verde.

Gonna try that thing where you fold the quesadilla in quarters, then cook it. Chicken, black beans, shredded cotija cheese, that salsa verde I just made fresh, and a sliced golden heirloom tomato from the farmer’s market.

A tortilla on a plate with ingredients laid out in quarters. Top Left, shredded chicken; top right, black beans; bottom right, cotija cheese; and bottom left, salsa verde and tomato.

This Week in Kevin Got the Heck Outside: a couple of rad great blue herons and what is either a greater or lesser yellowlegs—I’m not sure which! 🪶

A great blue heron steps out on a log floating in a marsh with lily pads and such. A great blue heron in flight low across the water, moving right to left. Its right wingtip actually touches the water and you can see its reflection. A greater of lesser yellowlegs—a shorebird with black and white spotted wings and a long black beak—searches for food in the marsh near Petrie Island. I’ve found one of those huge pieces at the National Gallery that you can get lost in for a while. This is Tribute to the Water Lilies by Jean Paul Riopelle, lots of paint applied with a palette knife

A huge triptych of abstract art composed of strokes completed in a palette knife, giving it the look of stained glass cells a bit. The center panel is darker overall and balances the lighter stuff on the sides.

Went to Mud Lake today with Mom and we saw stuff. Bee butt! Wood duck! And while the last two pics aren’t stellar they make me happy for reasons: 1) I haven’t seen a rose-breasted grosbeak in five years and 2) American redstarts do NOT stay still and this is my first half decent pic of one 🪶

A native bee (more bumble and less honey) on a magenta-purple swamp flower. This is, as far as I know, an immature male wood duck in the lake. RED EYES, and the rest of the glorious plumage that we’ll see later isn’t there yet. A rose-breasted grosbeak on a branch, shot from below so that the red on top of the white belly is very clear. A lil American redstart on a twig, searching for delicious bugs. Black bird with orange and yellow down low and also among the wing feathers.

I use Imprimerie Gauvin in Quebec. So the paperwork is in proving your books, if shipped to the U.S., are covered under CUSMA. They ARE, to be clear, but you need a certificate saying so for every shipment! Without that, you get a tariff.

But for every small business that isn’t covered by CUSMA or doesn’t fill out the paperwork in time, they have to pay this tariff (or their customers do) or go out of business. And what will the tariff money do if collected? Pay for tax cuts for billionaires. To restate my thesis: huge dick 5/

This paperwork burden is such a gigantic pile of horseshit. Will a tariff convince me to move my extremely small business back to the U.S.? Fuck no. And I doubt it will persuade any other small Canadian businesses that they should move to a fascist country with no health care 4/

The good news: soft covered books are covered by CUSMA as exempt, and on top of that, 100% of the paper and labor is North American (hint: it’s Canadian). But because the de minimis exemption is going away, I have to fill out paperwork declaring all this or else I get tariffed anyway. 3/

I am the smallest of businesses. It’s me. Until now, I’ve been exempt from tariffs because of the de minimis exemption, which says that goods under a certain dollar threshold aren’t subject to tariffs. That goes away on August 29 & all goods get a 35% tariff UNLESS covered by CUSMA agreement. 2/

So yeah, for all the other ways in which that fascist lump is a dick, see the news. There are, I know, innumerable more important things. But a wee thread on how the tariffs and removal of the de minimis exemption are hurting small businesses may prove educational for a few folks, so here goes: 1/

They’re dangerous. But not as dangerous as…

Volcanus! He strikes with living lava! On a rocky moonscape, we see a man in red tights grinning evilly as he squirts lava out of his shorts. A strange bipedal catlike creature with a red cape watches in horror

Couple of photos from Mom: a pair of red deer and a great blue heron.

Two red deer by a pond’s edge, with forested bits behind them. One of them, in front, looks young and has its front roles legs in the pond. The one in back, perhaps the mother, is larger and in movement. A great blue heron misses the target but there’s a line of water dripping from its beak and a ripple in the pond where it made the attempt to snag a fish. Behind it we see a muddy churned up bank where many deer have come to get a drink.
