There's this same weird exact tension in TTRPG publishing, a sizeable portion being fun-loving hobbyists releasing awesome shit for free or tips and then an industry strata of desperate hustlers panicky and extremely misplacedly angry about how that messes with their quality-for-price angle.
If you are hesitant or nervous about the performance element or coming off as a big nerd, the awesome thing about TTRPGing is that not only is being a big goofy embarrassing nerd a big point of it all, but the nerdiest version of you is going to absolutely be outnerded at any table you land in.
If you have been adjacent to people clearly enjoying themselves roleplaying and have always wanted to try, we're kind of in a golden age of an absolute ton of people wanting to game with you. Dooooo it
The psychological healing power of killing some weird dungeon monster together or solving some Cthulhu mystery has been pretty unparalleled in my life, and those soft skills from running games and negotiating dicerolls has paid off professionally too!
It is obviously no substitute for the very important work of social action and mutual aid but Jesus Christ you have to have some fun sometimes too and TTRPGing is easy, incredibly cheap, and immensely socially satisfying. I promise you it will silence the headnoise for a few hours.
