I remember hearing a presentation by an MD. It was clear that she knew basically nothing about Latino culture in the US; she mispronounced a few very basic Spanish words. But she used "Latinx" a bunch of times, in a way that suggested she was confident that it was the RIGHT word to use.
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
In the late 2010s, many people and institutions with power in the US decided that they WOULD use this term all over the place, with seemingly total ignorance and incuriosity about whether the people it referred to liked the term. I'm glad you don't do that, but MANY others did.
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, this 👇
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay fine. I remember seeing a "Latinx Employee Appreciation Month" sign on a Macy's in Portland in 2019. The large majority of actual Latino people in actual America in 2019 didn't use the term and didn't like it. It *WAS* foisted on a population who did not want it.
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. Latino people I know and talk to overwhelmingly despise the term, and see it as insulting that outsiders with no knowledge of the Spanish language adopted it. (I'd be pissed too if American society decided something was problematic about the word "Jew" and we need to be called "Jxws" instead.)

Way >>>1000/yr in '80s. Few were "apprehended" then because there were few BP agents, little surveillance technology, little interior enforcement, and no walls or fences besides one small stretch near San Diego (whose construction was seen, properly I'd say, as a major insult by Mexico).
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't think quantity is the root of it. 🤔 1,000s of Mexicans would migrate to/from SoCal every year in the 80s. There were signs near San Diego warning drivers to be on the lookout for migrants crossing roads. It was not treated as a serious crime or an invasion, just as a bit chaotic.
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
It was quite normal, if not technically legal, to cross US/MX border without documentation until the 80s-90s, and even more recently US/CA. Why is this something we as a society should consider a problem AT ALL? As someone who managed to grow up near both borders, it's strange and alarming to me.
Daniel Lenski (@moxfyre.bsky.social) reply parent
Why is it more serious? People would routinely and casually cross the US/Mexico border for work or just visits into the 80s and 90s. With Canada, it was normal until the 00s, with essentially zero documentation. What changed in recent decades that made us collectively find this sinister??
