stalagmite from Ancient Greek σταλαγμίας (stalagmías) 'dropping, trickling'. stalactite from σταλακτός (stalaktós) 'dripping'. Ole, maybe you could have found some Greek words that sound more different? Now we’re stuck.
Thomas Edwards (@mpeg2tom.bsky.social) reply parent
Apparently stalactite and stalagmite were both coined in the mid-17th century by Danish physician and naturalist Ole Worm from slightly different Greek words derived from the verb stalassein, meaning "to drip".

On the other hand, maybe Putin threatened a tactical nuclear strike by an air launched ballistic missile or cruise missile on the Wagner column. Only the crew member inputting the target coordinates would need to know where it was going, and could have even been kept in the dark about the details.
Thomas Edwards (@mpeg2tom.bsky.social) reply parent
It is still unknown why the Wagner march on Moscow stopped. Did Prigozhin just have a “change of heart”? Or was it due to a military threat? Perhaps Putin did not think he could get the Russian Air Force to have an “eye-to-eye” conventional attack on the Wagner, or that it would be politically bad.
Thomas Edwards (@mpeg2tom.bsky.social) reply parent
If Putin feels the military situation puts his political control of Russia is at risk (and thus his personal safety), I believe he would be willing to order tactical nuclear weapon strikes on Ukrainian troop masses or Ukrainian command-and-control.
