In normal times I'd sort of agree. Most people (including politicians) are searching for a better life. They just differ on the how this is achieved. MAGA is different. It's built on hate. So when you say "we all hold precious" you aren't referring to half of American voters.

Went a few years ago. I have an English biography on kindle. He comes across as a moody and difficult person to workwith. Prone to mood swings. But what really intrigued me as I read on was the number of times (especially on US and UK affairs) I was left thinking : he is so on the button.

Every time I see something about a legal challenge in the USA it always comes with that wee note "appointed by Xxxx". It seems to be an accepted given that, the law, is not the primary concern of judges. Which is why it is so easy for MAGA to dismiss court rulings.

I'm with Orange in France. I have the phone set to refuse any number not in my repertoire. It doesn't ring. I just get a 'blocked call' notification. On the fixed line ; I have ring tone changes for family. Regional codes and caller ID help. If it's not 032... (so it's local) I don't answer.
Is it that surprising? Apart from the anger about tariffs, the abandon of Ukraine, and the in your face hostility to foreigners, there's also the point that the Gov keeps telling everyone how all the major tourist cities are murder and drug riddled. Go to Canada, it's nicer by far.

Last weekend I had some Canadians with me doing the whole Arras thing. They'd come out from Paris for the day and were telling me how they'd simply queued for Notre Dame. Went down with family on Tuesday and gave it a go. Looked bad, out onto the bridge, but, kept moving. 20 mins and we were in.
Oh, we had that as well. A slightly chilled Brouilly. Had that on my last visit to the resto. It's not bad. The serveur brought out another carafe of water to go with it 😊
