There was 3-4 generations of resentment among poor whites, most visibly in the “Lost Cause” narrative. “The South will rise again” was an oft repeated refrain. It was a ridiculous sentiment, but quite widespread. My sense is that’s a quiet part of what’s playing out. Absurd as that seems.

I was raised in the south. The region was eco depressed for a century after the end of the civil war. This wasn’t due to deliberate policy as much as the inherent nature of the culture. It remained primarily agrarian with a relatively small number of value added jobs. Poverty was widespread.
