My husband and I generally speak together in Chinese (the only language we're both fluent in, although it's his second and my third) and in that language they often use 听话 (tīnghuà) which literally means listen + speech but like... it has the standard meaning of obey. Drives me nuts.

I was at a KOREAN STUDIES conference in June, at a table with 6 people, 4 were Korean, and this Korean professor comes, joins us and says his name is Choy. Like, really? It's a Korean Studies conference, we all speak Korean. In fact we were speaking Korean until you came to our table....

They aren't even accommodating, if you're in Korea, they're just confusing people. Like everywhere they go someone will say "배산" and then they'll be on the damn subway or bus and it will say "비아산" -- who does that even help?

Someone liked my old post which reminded me.... #Korean buses, subways, and etc. still mispronounce Korean place names. It drives me crazy. In Korean the pronunciation will be perfect, then they will switch to English, and say it TOTALLY WRONG. Which just confuses everyone.

There are new restrictions on owning multiple properties that (if I understand it) makes the taxes go up a lot if you own too many properties, which is part of what's going on with the rental market these days-- people are trying to sell their extra places, not rent them out.

Maybe even a requirement for holding an E1 for more than 4 year tied to a basic Korean exam. TOPIK Level 4 required to get tenure? I mean, it seems weird if you think about it that I've never heard of a teaching job here that required it.

I think it should be right there in the contract for tenure track jobs. Successful advancement past XXX dependent on learning the Korean language. At least somewhat. Of course, I also think the university should provide the classes and maybe provide some course relief to study Korean.

Something I am sure will be a very unpopular opinion, but.... If I apply for a job in the Netherlands like one of my good friends, I'm given 4 years to get my Dutch to the level of participating in a faculty meeting. Basically this is true for faculty jobs ALLOVER the world, but in Korea? Nope.

Right now, other than for foreigners who can pass as Korean, there is no path to just being universally accepted in this country. You're always foreign/other. It's kind of exhausting. p.s. this thread is inspired by protectionism around insurance.

As I tell my students, Korean policies towards foreigners such as marriage migrants are also based on *assimilation* as the mark of *good* foreignness. In some ways I'm all for #assimilation (learn Korean, understand Korean etiquette), but if you won't be accepted as a Korean,

Things could be improved if 1. Koreans in general had a more comprehensive knowledge of non-Koreans (not from Hollywood movies) 2. Isolationists didn't freak people out that foreigners are taking *their* resources.

So yes, Korea was liberated from Japan, but then denied self-determination and self-government, their land split in half randomly, and in the south all but the most right wing of Korean leaders were totally side-lined. As an American, today feels like shame.

US arrived in Korea (weeks later) and they refused to even acknowledge the interim government or the Korean leaders. And the US and Russia split up Korea into their zones, and in the southern zone the US took control of everything. Imperialist f-ing bulls*it, in other words.
